Characteristics of corridos · Reinforce social ties, commemorate important events

Example of old corrido ("Kiansis") which narrates the first cattle drive to Kansas

████████ ████ █████ ████ ████ ███ ███████ ████ ███████ ███████ ██ ███ ██ ██ █████ ███ ████████ ████ █████ ███████ ██████ ███ ████████ ███████ ███████████████ ███████ ██ ██████ ████ ██ █████████ ███ █████████ ████ ██ █████████ ███ ████ █████████ ███ █████ ████ ███████ ███████████ ████████ ██████ ████ ███ ████████ ██ ███ ██████ ██████████ ██ ███ ███████ ███ ███████ ██ ████████ ████████ ███ ████████ ███ ████ ███████ ████████ ███ █████████ ████ ███ ████████ ██ █ ████████████ ██ █████ ████ ██ ███ ███ ██████ ██████ ████ ███ ███ ████ ████ ████ ██ ████ █████████ ██████████████ █ ████ ██████ ████ ███████ ██████ ████ ███████ █████ ███████ ██ █████ ██ █████ ████████ █████████ ██████████ █████ █████ ██ █████████ ██████ ██ █████████████ ██████ ███ ██████ ██████ ███████ ████ ████████ ██████ ████████████ ███ ███████ ████████████ ██ ███████ ██████████ ████████ ███ ███████████ ███ ██████████ ██ ███ ███████ ██████████

Language use in corridos · Simple, direct, recognizable, follows recurring conventions

Two examples ("Cortez" and "Kiansis") of a common convention of storm-related imagery

███ ███████ ██ ████████ ███ ████ ██ ████████ ██████ ███ ████ ██ ███████ ██████████ █████ ████ ██████ ██████ ████ ███ ██████ ██ ████████ ███

More language use in corridos · Recurring lines from one song to another

████ ██ ████ ███████ ██ ███ █████████ ██████ ███████ ██████ ██ ██████████ ███ █████████ ██ ███ ███████ ██ █████████ ███████ ██ ██████████ ██ ████████ ████ ████ ████ █ ███ ████████ █ ██ ███ █████ ██ █ ███████ █████ █ ████ ██ ███ ███ ██ ███ ██████ █ ██ ███ ████████ ████████ ███ █████ ███ █████ █████ ███ █ ███ ███████████ ███ ██████ ███ ██████ █████ ███ █████████ ███ ██████ ████████ ███ ████ ██ ███ ███████ ██ ██████████ ███ ████████ ███ ███ ██████ ███████ █████████ ██ ██████████ ██ ██████ ███

Example of recurring line · Closing verse ("despedida")
