The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), approved by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, was the first international treaty to expressly affirm universal respect for human rights. ███
Intro topic ·Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)
First international treaty to expressly affirm universal respect for human rights.
UN Charter encouraged respect for human rights. Groups lobbied for provision creating legal obligation to act on behalf of human rights. This didn't happen, but UDHR was drafted.
To understand the purpose of these lines, read the part in between them. We’re told that some people thought the language in Article 1 of the 1945 UN Charter wasn’t strong enough. It merely stated that countries should “respect” human rights. These people lobbied for a stronger provision, the language of which is in the second quote. So the purpose of these quotes is to show the difference between the Article 1 language and the stronger language in the proposal.
a
to contrast the █████████ ███████████ ██ █████ ██████ ██ ███ ███ █████████
The quotes don’t define human rights. They describe what countries are required to do.
b
to compare the ████████ ██ ███ █████ ██████ ████████ ██ ███ ███ █████████
This best captures the purpose, as we can tell from the lines in between the two quotes. The second quote shows the stronger language lobbied for by people who felt Article 1 was too weak.
c
to identify a ████████████ ██████████ ████ ██ ██████ ██ ███ ███ █████████
This doesn’t capture the purpose of showing the stronger language of the proposal. The author doesn’t bring up the quotes to show a similarity. She brings them up to show a difference.
d
to highlight what ███ ██████ ████████ ██ ██ ███ ████ █████████ █████ ██ ████ ████████
There’s no indication the author thinks the quotes are the “most important point” of each document. Read the lines between the quotes to get an understanding of the author’s purpose. The author wants to show the kind of stronger language lobbied for by people who were unsatisfied with Article 1.
This doesn’t capture the purpose of showing the stronger language of the proposal. There’s no indication the author cares about the style of each document. What the author wants to show is the stronger requirements of the proposal. Whereas Article 1 required countries to “respect” human rights, the proposal required countries to “take separate and joint action,” which goes further than merely “respect” for rights.
