Forests are among the world's most valuable resources, both in a narrowly economic sense and in a broader, ecological sense. ███████ ████████ ████ █████ ██████████ ████████ ████ ██████████ ████ █ ███████ ██ ███ ███████ █████ ████████ ███████████ ███████ ███████ ███████████ ██████ █████████ ███ ███████ ████ ███████ ████ █████ ██████ ████ █████ ███

Context / Intro · Forests are important

Forests are both economically and ecologically important.

Main Point · Policy decisions about conservation of forests require understanding arguments for and against

Author will scrutinize two specific claims: 1. that forests create oxygen; and 2. that forests preserve biodiversity

Criticize Claim 1 · Forests are "the lungs of the earth"

This is a myth. Forests neither produce nor consume oxygen in net.

Claim 2 · Preservation of biodiversity requires stricter conservation of forests

Economic argument for preserving biodiversity: could lead to discovery of new medicines. Moral argument for preserving biodiversity: it's an intrinsic good.

Critique of Claim 2 · Is stricter conservation of forests really required?

First, deforestation isn't occurring as much as many believe. Second, deforested land that turn into wood plantations actually relieve economic pressure on forests.

Arguments concerning the ████████ ███ ██ ███████ ████ ██ █████████ ████████ ██████ ██████████ ██████ █████████ ███ ██ █████

This is the main point of the passage. P1 articulates this point by stating the importance of carefully examining the arguments about the economic use of forests, and the rest of the passage examines some of these arguments. P2 examines an argument about the oxygen-renewing capacity of forests, and P3 and P4 examine the arguments about biodiversity.

The author does not claim that the danger from deforestation is insignificant when compared to attempts at stricter regulation. This is not a claim made in the passage, so it cannot be the main point.

Careful review of ████████ ██████████ █████ ████ ███████ █████████████ ███ ████████████ ██ ███████ ██████ ██ ██████████ ███████████ ██ ██████████ ██ ███████ ██ ███ ████ ███████

This is a claim made in P4, but this is not the main point of the passage as a whole. (C) omits P1-P3.

P3 discusses the potential for discovering new medicines, as well as the intrinsic good of preserving species diversity. However, P3 does not say that the noninstrumental good is the primary reason for preserving rain forests. Additionally, (D) only mentions topics discussed in P3, so it does not capture the main point of the passage as a whole.

This is not a claim made in the passage, so it cannot be the main point.
