It says that sympathetic treatment suggests that one should be unconcerned about contributing to societal good, and therefore modern lit can damage individuals as well as society.
Because the individual can be damaged along with society, it is necessary that it is to the advantage of some individuals that they be concerned with contributing to societal good (B).
