Self-study
A lot of what I want to talk about in my personal statement has to do with being in the foster system, but the more I try to lead with that the more I doubt that it should be a focal point. It's just so hard to start without coming out as a linear life story which I want to avoid. How do you START a personal statement?

I was so happy to see this! I wrote my personal statement about being in foster care and think that our backgrounds will provide such an important perspective to the field of law. First, I am proud of you! Second, absolutely write about foster care. I would be happy to share my personal statement with you if you want to reach out to me. As I was drafting my statement, I had similar feelings. But it is such an important story to be told. I started my statement with a memory from my time in care. Then, I went into how I got to college. That story alone is valuable. You don't need to detail what exactly got you placed into foster care, maybe just a brief explanation. But your background probably contributes to your reason for pursuing law school, and I found a way to tie this connection together nicely. Good luck to you!
Start it with a story, one of the great things my mentor taught me was that a story will stay with people. tell a story of how being in foster care made you want to pursue a career in law.
