Self-paced
Hi!
I’m currently 30 and my diagnostic 154, im thinking of signing the LSAT in November. I study but go back in forth with being worried about starting so much later in age.
Any late(r) starters here?? What do you do to keep yourself motivated?

Um . . . I'm 37 and will test in September. I ask myself 'will you be bummed you didn't do this ten years from now, 5 years from now, 2 years from now?' ....
Pump yourself up and talk yourself up as the person you know you are now and working to become. Find things you can say to yourself that are good but also something that you are able to either view as true or as something you can see yourself striving to embody. You can view this as gaslighting yourself but I don't think you can truly lie to yourself enough to get there, especially when working to do something that has objectively better/right and worse/wrong answers like the LSAT.
For me, I connect it to other aspects of my life where I've shown the "hard work" and if I can do x, I can do this. If I'm going to be going through law school, why would I let the hurdle of LSAT studying beat me down that hard?
Likewise, point to the improvement over your studying and use that as something to help connect to the current and future improvement you're working on.
I will be 30 soon and I have had people in my life question why I am still pursuing this. My response is always in 3 years I will still be 3 years older but I can do that as an attorney or as someone who still wishes they had pursued their goal and didn't.
43 here and still feel young enough for a nice legal ride!
I'm 32! It's really comforting to me to go read Reddit threads about people who started law school later in life. The feedback is overwhelmingly positive.
Even after law school, you'll probably still have at least 35 years of working before you retire. Do you want to spend THIRTY-FIVE years in a career you don't want? Think of how much success you can have in law in that time.
What do you need motivation for? To keep studying? Or to go to law school in general? I'm 45, so I've got a whole 15 years on you. :) I'll be 49 or 50 when I get my first law job. It's never too late to make a career change!
You're not too old. I started studying in my late 30's. I'm 40 now and will be 45/46 when I finish law school. Keep going!
@ElleJ wow that’s so amazing! Congratulations!
Honestly speaking... I empathize with how you're feeling, because I'm also 30 and have desired to attend law school since I was like 15 years old. Part of me wishes I had begun law school a couple of years ago; with that being said, I completely agree with @TravelJunky! If you're fortunate enough to live till your 90 or 100 years old, then you would spend the next 60 or 70 years never being able to refer to yourself as a lawyer if you decide to let your age prevent you from pursuing this goal. Also, people on Reddit and other forums in their early 30s or mid-to-late 20s who make these kinds of posts about whether it's too late to pursue something are being a bit insensitive toward older applicants in their 40's and beyond.
It's never too late to evolve and become a better, more educated person. There are people in their 50s and 60s who decide to become doctors. If you love learning, then why not?? Unfortunately, schooling in the U.S. is outrageously expensive, but scholarships do exist.
@JO_Odera this is such a great way to look at it, I feel exactly the way you do but I definitely get it! I never thought about how older people feel and honestly when I see them pursue it, I don’t even think of their age, it’s just when it comes to me personally I’m like I’m too old. But it’s definitely a bad mindset I need to get out of!
Thank you so much!
I repeat to myself “the only person you’re in competition with is yourself” , “everything happens when it’s supposed to happen”. Think about where your feet are today are you truly comfortable? Do you enjoy what you’re doing? Write down your “Why Law?” on a sticky and post it above where you study.
@TravelJunky thank you so much for this!
@Chloe_turner of course, anytime.
