So... I'm filling out my law school applications right now, and I'm noticing a trend. A bunch of schools are asking if I'm applying to any other law schools (the answer is so obviously yes) and if so, which schools. I'm not sure how to approach this question. Should I fill it out, or choose to ignore it? Any advice would be appreciated here...

First things first - this is a standard format question that LSAC offers to schools when they're building their apps. All schools have to do to use it is check a box when building their app form. So don't read too deeply into matters! It's not like a bunch of schools independently wrote this same question to their app.

But with that said, schools are asking this for one of two reasons:

    1) To understand why you're applying to their school. I was the Director of Admissions and Fin Aid for a while at Notre Dame Law. If I was reading an app and I saw that someone indicated they were also applying to Fordham, BC, Georgetown, and Villanova, I could maybe guess that they were Catholic. Or if I saw that they were applying to Michigan, Northwestern, Illinois, and Indiana, I could guess that they have some ties to this particular region.

    2) They're trying to suss out the competition. For example, if your stats are over my medians and you indicate we're the lowest ranked school you've applied to ... well ... that's not looking too good for our chances of enrolling you, does it?

So with that said, you have a couple options here:

    • You can just skip it. It's not required information for any school and you can just hop over it.

    • You can be strategically honest. Let's say you're applying to 20 schools and there's no connective thread between the schools other than "I think my stats will play at these schools." It's probably not a good look to list all those schools in this question. So pick the 5-8 apps that make the most sense to mention.

    • You can be completely honest. List all 20 schools AND tell us that we're the lowest ranked school you're applying to!

I leave it to you to determine what you're most comfortable with, but I think most people can opt for "strategically honest" and that's alright!
