Hello,
So, this is a bit of an odd question. I had a relative that taught at one of the universities I’m applying to (not at the law school). Learning that I had this familial connection was what initially made me interested in this school, and I fell more in love as I researched. But would it be tacky to mention this connection?

That sounds like an interesting and authentic way to start your story! Especially because it sounds like you have more reasons beyond your initial family connection. As long as you centre your focus on the aspects that you discovered through later research, I think you should be fine!
Not tacky at all! I think it's reasonable to expect that applicants may have an interest in our school that originates in some combination of professional, academic, and/or personal experiences. That's ok! You just want to make sure to connect the original personal interest to the current concrete interest in the law school.
