The short answer here is that it's always better to sound like you have a plan ("here's what I want to do as a lawyer!") rather than not. To paraphrase something that a former university president once said: the essence of leadership is vision, no one wants to follow someone blowing an uncertain trumpet.

And just remember that you're being admitted to "law school" and not to "a specific program within the law school." It's alright for your path to change or to discover the path in law school!

  • I would agree with the other comment, a lot of incoming students arrive not knowing the areas of law they want to practice in. I think it would be good to have areas of interest listed, but the AOs wont hold you to it if you get accepted. Do you feel like your PS draft/idea currently ties into pursuing a JD? I only ask because despite you being unsure there may be a field that drew your interest and that is something you can expand on

Thank you very much! I am coming from an envtl background and am interested in envtl law and explained that in my narrative. I did note a few other areas of law that I am also interested in and how aspects of all of these areas align with my professional goals. that said, I think my PS does explain why I’m interested in a JD

Then tbh, I think you are good! I think what they just dont want is for you to say I want to save the planet and being a lawyer can help! ik it is a silly example , but they might read that and wonder why you did not perhaps study to be a biology major etc. I think the only way you might be able to strengthen is if you can include a certain law you would push change for or a situation of representation you might find yourself in. Best of luck!!

In my opinion, I would not do that. If you're mentioning areas of law you're interested in, it should be a natural progression from whatever narrative is expressed in your personal statement, and it would seem odd if you said, "well, I'm not sure." AOs know that a lot of people will likely not go into the kinds of law they claim to be interested in. That's expected.
