Is it not advised to explicitly reference one's personal statement in their diversity statement? For example, "In my personal statement, I explained how my interest in law school is connected to X (a part of my identity). I now want to discuss how X informs who I am and how I would contribute to the Y Law School community." I know the wisdom is usually 'show don't tell'--is the above approach too formulaic/heavy-handed?

Nope, you don't have to make that explicit callback nor should you!
I will have literally just read your personal statement not a minute or two earlier and will remember the "X part of this applicant's identity." So instead, just use the DS to talk about what "X" means to you, how it's shaped you, why it informs your world view, and all that. Just jump right into things!
Good luck!
Thank you!
