Helena is a research engineer in the field of quantum communications, and a graduate of Wellesley College, where she studied Physics and Mathematics. She’s currently preparing to apply to law school after scoring a 179 on the LSAT. She’s been tutoring students in mathematics and writing for more than 5 years, with former students now at institutions like Williams College and CalTech.
Helena firmly believes in the words of a former physics professor: Eat Your Vegetables! The LSAT is learnable, and her focus blends a first principles approach to concept mastery with optimized practice tactics for repeatable execution under stressful test day conditions.
When she’s not tackling LR questions, Helena loves all things outdoors as well as knitting. She’s currently completing a cardigan and learning to rock climb.
For science passages requiring an understanding of phenomenon occurring in the passage, it can be useful in untimed practice to create a small, simple diagram of the steps of the phenomenon. Additionally, understanding might be assisted by replacing technical jargon with the meaning of that word as referenced in the passage. In PT133.S4.P3, that could look like telling yourself whenever you see the word "magnetite" that you're replacing it with "material that can affect compass readings", or "magnetic reversals" with "a change in the direction of this thing that can be measured to tell scientists about the age of rocks".
Additionally, if you feel confused or lost within a science passage, it may help to ask each paragraph "Why did the author include this? What did I learn from this paragraph that is important to understanding the phenomenon?". It can also be helpful to separate out the "what" of the phenomenon from the "how" or the "why" that may be provided by the passage.
