@ I don't have an answer for you but I just wanna share I'm in the same boat in terms of studying. I also work full time and started studying in December as much as I could (but not as much as I wanted) I just finished the CC and am trying to balance the alarmingly small amount of time I have left before the July test. I'm wondering what your plan is?

I'm realizing that I should probably plan to take the September or October test as well....

feel free to PM!

@ it should say on the LSAC website, if you log on and look at you LSAT status and there's an option to change it. I think it's like 6 weeks or so?

@ Thank you so much for the link and the video! I just watched it as it was very helpful. Especially about the timing of how often you should take PTs and the purpose of taking them. I haven't take my first post CC Pt yet so I will do that this weekend, knowing I will probably bomb but get useful data.

A question I had is, if I start this process now do you think it's possible I can be ready to go by the July test I am registered for? I do work full time and there are 2 weekends where I can't dedicate a lot of time so with your methods I probably will only be able to get 2-4 PTs in.

If not do you think I could get there by September? I'm afraid to push much past that because I want to have time to get my actual application materials together as well.

@ thanks for the advice and encouragement. I'm gonna start PTs ASAP, I've decided to go ahead and try and throw in logic games from PT 1-35 whenever I can to help solidify the LG lessons too!

@ I do! Two in fact are going to write some hopefully stellar letters of rec for me! I'm hoping it can compensate for my lack of GPA.

What if I don't have a GPA?

I attended an honors liberal arts college where we didn't have a traditional grading system. Instead we had a pass/fail style program. This means that I don't have any kind of GPA. The LSAC guidelines say that my narrative evaluations will not be converted into a GPA and says "Credits for the work in these courses are totaled and reported separately as unconverted credits.".

Given that I am not sure how to evaluate my chances of getting into schools/receiving scholarships since every estimator asks me for a GPA. Anyone have any insight into this? Is there a placeholder GPA I can use? Does it hurt? Help?

My LSAT is 172. I'm would go to NYU if I could get a good scholarship, but I'm looking to do exclusively Public Interest so I don't really need to go to a T-14.

Finished CC: Need Advice

Hi all,

I’ve been studying since January, it’s taken me a bit to finish the CC since I have the Ultimate + version, but now that I have I’m trying to plan how to best spend my remaining time before the taking July test. My plan was to take a day to review all the content I went over and redo the LGs from the CC and then after that just take as many prep tests as I can.

The issue is I work full time, so my only times to study are on the weekends and maybe for an hour or two after work on weekday nights if my brain cooperates. I tried to take my full days remaining and split them up with half of them being reserved to take full prep test, and half of them to BR those prep tests. There are full 2 weekends and 1 full weekend day between now and the test that I won’t be able to study for so I’m getting a little nervous. I’m hoping to make it through 7 full prep test but that doesn’t feel like enough. Should I also be trying to do a section of a prep test every weeknight I can?

Since I only have time for a couple of tests, should I be prioritizing the most recent PTs or are there certain ones I should cover first?

Hi all,

I juuuust finished the full CC (finally) and am gonna begin doing PTs ahead of the July LSAT I am registered for. My plan was to take it in July, but if I didn't get the score I wanted, retake it again in September. Given that I won't know my score until the September Registration deadline has passed it appears the next test I could register for with such knowledge is the October 28th one.

I am hoping to apply to law schools to start in 2020, with a couple of those programs requiring me to apply by 12/31/19. My question is, if I take it again in October will that give me enough time to still be competitive in my applications? What's the latest someone could take the test and still be able to apply without it being consider suboptimal?

@ sorry if I was unclear. No matter what I decide I'm keeping the 172. The question is just whether I should take the September test as well.

Also after doing more research, I will not be applying to Columbia or Georgetown. However I will be applying to NYU.

Would I Be Considered an URM?

It seems like it's a pretty narrow category , so think I might not qualify but I wanted to double check.

I'm mixed race (half middle eastern half white). I'm also a trans women and queer I know that isn't race and ethnicity.

@ well if I were to retake, I would study for the next month. Which means I couldn't work on application materials for the next month, which means I would probably apply a month later than I would if I canceled. That's the decision to make. I think if I studied for the next month, and something didn't go wrong on test day, I could probably get a 174-176 or so.

If I didn't study more and just took it I'm sure I'd do worse then 172 bc of atrophy of the skills.

@ That's helpful insight. I don't really wanna go to Columbia but it made my list as a potential in the case I got like a high 170s score. I would attend NYU if I could get a strong scholarship, but I think that would probably come in the form of one of their public interest scholarships anyways. It's hard to tell if a 173-175 second score would help more then an extra month of working on application materials since I've heard these scholarships are about a lot more then your LSAT score. Still unsure but I'm leaning towards not retaking.

@ Thank You! Did you end up taking it?

That Was Unexpected: Should I Retake in September?

This community has been so helpful to me so I'm hoping you all can advise me (sorry for the lengthy post)

I just got my score for July back and it was higher than I thought it would be given how hard the test felt (yay!). I got a 172. Originally I was planning using July as a practice, since this was my first actual test and I had only taken 3 PTs before it and I figured I could do better, so I registered for the September test before I even took the July test. Since my score was higher than expected I'm not so sure I actually should even take the September one. My post diagnostic PT scores have been 170/173/173/175 (this past weekend). Every BR I've done has been 179.

I am not striving to go to a T-14. I want to practice public interest law, there's a very high possibility I want to become Public Defender but I also want to learn more about immigration law, labor law, or some sort of progressive policy council. No part of me will EVER want any kind of corporate or non public interest law. The biggest thing I am looking for in schools I am applying to be able to go tuition free (ideally with living expenses covered as well) as I don't want to take on debt since I won't be able to pay it off with the kind of law I want to practice.

My undergrad was pass/fail so I don't have a GPA but it was a pretty good school. I have been in the workforce for almost 6 years doing working as a general manager of a business, a mid-higher level work for nonprofits, and I am about to start a job as a Union Field Representative.

My list of schools (with the 75th percentile score in parenthesis) I wanted to apply to initially are as follows:

NYU (172), CUNY (158), Seattle University (157), American University (160), Cardozo (162), University of Washington (165). I've also been considering Georgetown (168) and Columbia (167/172/174-this is the 25/50/75th percentile list).

My considerations over the decision are below:

If I decide to retake, I think there is a very reasonable chance I could score in the 174-177 range. Since July I have studied a lot and really shored up some of my weaknesses in logical reasoning. I'm assuming a higher number will make it easier for me to get a full ride. It's possible if I blew it out of the water I'd consider higher placed school, but since I'm doing Public Interest I don't really see the need to.

If I decide to withdraw and not retake, I free up the next month to focus on getting my application materials together (something I haven't done at all) and could likely apply earlier as a result (October instead of November). I've been told that applying earlier increases my chance for getting scholarships. I'm also starting a new job on Monday so I can devote more attention to adjusting to that. I also don't run the risk of somehow bombing a test and hurting my 172 average I currently have.

Given all of this, what do you all think I should do? Feel free to ask questions!! Thank you!

I have the exact same question with the exception of me getting a 172, but I also don't have a GPA and would like to go to NYU in public interest.

Sorry to piggyback. Congrats!

Hi there,

Is there a lesson as part of the CC where the process for approaching LR Evalutate questions is covered? If not is there a particular problem/ set of problems JY works through where he explains his strategy in detail?

Recommendations Reading Light Fields of Law?

Hi all,

I'm trying to keep my motivation about deciding to go for law school and I have a strange question:

Are there fields of law where you don't spend >50% of your time reading? One's that keep you away from a desk more or end up being more interpersonal rather than solitary in nature?

I am not a huge fan of reading in general, I have a reading disability and it's very taxing to do for long periods of time.I know that will mean Law School will be horrible but I'm prepared to do that if the pay off is a job I like. Everything outside of the reading makes me feel like I'm a good fit for the degree. I am aware reading is a necessary part being a lawyer, but if my job was almost all reading I don't think I could do it.

I am currently most interested in Public Defense or possibly some kind of Policy Council. Are there other fields of law you think I should look into?

I'm not trying to make money, mostly just trying to do public interest kind of stuff/stick up for the little guy.

Didn't intend for people to give away anything protected! Thanks for you point everyone. Folks should feel free to wait until (next week?) to answer.

I'm mostly looking to see if folks felt the test format has changed a lot in recent tests and what pre testing rituals folks engage in (ie LG set before)

Prioritizing Problem Sets

Hi,

I have the premium course, but I don't think I have enough time before the LSAT in July to finish every single problem set (I'm at parallel reasoning now and work full time) in each section and still get a month or two of practice tests in. Is there a "suggested minimum" list of problem sets I could prioritize in each section? Or is it better to do every problem set in the CC and less practice tests?

Does the base course have the same problem sets?

Folks who took the test: If you were gonna retake it/ could go back in time, what do you wish you had studied/brushed up on before hand?

Hi all,

Looking for a little reassurance because I'm kinda stressed after taking my LSAT Writing. I feel I made a really strong argument but it took me to the last second to finish. When I looked it over I realized with horror that I had made a couple of grammatical errors and big one repetition error ("This person should choose this should choose option this because blah blah blah..") in the very first sentence T_T

How much will that hurt me? Do they care about computer/editing errors more then content or am I okay since I made a solid argument?

Hi all,

I was wondering if folks have come up with any consistent/effective strategies for use of the 3 highlighter colors and underlining function on the Digital LSAT? This could be something like “Use yellow for premise, orange for conclusion, or use pink for key indicator words” etc.

I could make my own but I’m willing to bet someone else has figured out a good system. If there’s another thread on this I’m missing please feel free to link it!

I feel you. I submitted all my documents on 4/8/19 for the July test and they STILL haven’t gotten back to me. I’ve been calling every week since mid May, and all they have said is “we will email you when we reach a decision” “we are behind on our accommodation requests” when I called on May 30th they said they were still working on the June folks.

Their website says 14 business days and I’m pretty upset I haven’t gotten a response. Makes it really hard to take PTs... I don’t know what we can do...

@ okay! I’ll try that approach. Thank you for the tips and examples, especially letting me know that writing stuff out in Lawgic is rarely the correct thing to do. I’ve found that when I don’t do that and just go for it, I am often correct and less confused, so I will try more of that.

@ I'll try being more intuitive. I've seen some other courses have other methods too, such as looking only for words that are in the premise but not the conclusion or vise versa in the answer rather that answers that use words in both, but its still confusing. Not sure why. I might just have to accept that i'm not great at these.

New Question Types not in CC?

I just did my first PT which included 2 question types I have never encountered before: Substitution Equivalence LG questions and a Comparative RC Passage. It was pretty stunning to first see them since I have done the entire CC and they were never mentioned. I found the hidden SE lesson in the upper PTs and I dug around a little bit and found JYs strat for Comparative RC but now I'm wondering:

Are there any other new question types from recent PTs that are not part of the CC?

If so, where can I find resources to tackle them?

I think you have the definitions a little off.

A Necessary Condition is something that must be present in order for and argument/idea to follow logically at all. It DOES NOT on its own mean that something follows logically, rather that if that ISN'T PRESENT then it CANNOT follow logically. Likewise if the attempted sufficient condition does not meet EVERY necessary condition it wouldn't be a real sufficient condition.

A Sufficient Condition is something that on its own makes the argument or idea follow logically. If the sufficient condition is met, then all the necessary conditions are met by definition.

I like the example of "All cats are mammals" Cat is a sufficient condition, which means in order for something to be a cat it must meet the necessary condition of being a mammal. If I tell you my pet Mr. Fluffums is a cat, he has meet the suffcient condition, so we know he is also a mammal. However if I tell you Mr. Fluffums is a mammal, only the necessary condition has been met, which means we don't know if he is a cat. He could be, or he could be a ferret or any other mammals.

For the example above there are way more necessary conditions to being a cat that all have to be meet, like it has to be an animal, or living, or meow, or think that its better than you. If Mr. Fluffums wasn't any of these things we could be sure he isn't a cat.

I know that's really wordy, and it jumps a ahead in the CC a bit but I hope it helps?

Also in terms of indicators I like to remember this: 'the only' is the only use of the word only that indicates a sufficient condition will be the next word/phrase. All other uses will indicate a necessary condition will follow.

Can someone explain how the passage indicates that "seems unlikely" means "by human perception this would not be effective camouflage" rather than "based on how these predators perceive the black and white camouflage it would not be effective".

I sat with this question for a while and I ended up choosing A because it seemed like all the others, including C were just straight up wrong. Where as A had the potential of meaning there are just so many more of the prey animals that the predator can never cause them to become scarce. I can't understand why seem implies from the standpoint of human perception.

Thanks!

Trouble with SA and PSA Questions, help!

Hi all,

I've been studying for a little over 7 months but I've always had trouble with Sufficient Assumption and Pseudo Sufficient Assumption questions. I get them right a lot of the time but it takes forever, and writing out the lawgic often makes it worse for me.

I don't think JYs method works for me very well. I understand the principles of lawgic but I have a lot of trouble when the logic chains they present use slightly different subjects/are not worded in the same way. It's also really easy for my brain to get it all jumbled.

Anyone else have this issue? What worked for you?

Are there other methods for approaching these outside of writing out logic chains that can work?

#help

Not sure how to word this but;

how do you all set up your in-out board to represent a not both rule when the rule has an and/or statement in it.

For example If A is in then B and C are out or vise versa.

If it was just A -> /B then I know I can put A/B in my out group, but I'm not sure how to represent it when there's an and involved.

Does that make sense?

Hello,

I FINALLY heard back from the LSAC about my accommodations and I was granted not only extra time but an HTML Screen-Readable version of the test. For July, this means I will bring my own computer and can take the test at the center using my computer and screen reading software. I will bubble my answers in on a Scranton.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can practice this for prep tests? Has anyone taken this version before? Am I able to mark on the web page version of the test when I have eliminated and answer or to highlight ect?

Are you sure?
