Law School Toolbox 1L prep

Hey all,

I know 1L prep is generally not advised. However I was considering "Start Law School Right" by the Law School Toolbox. Can anyone provide feedback? I've looked for reviews but found none. Not sure if this is a new program or not.

This great as someone who is going to be in a similar position.

What kind of work did you have duding 1L summer?

Prior to law school did you have any professional experience?

Out of all the people you saw getting interviews and landing BL jobs could you give a rough estimate of how many where involved in groups like law review, moot court..ect?

Thanks again!

Hi all,

So I currently I have my law school search narrowed down to 3. Indiana, Illinois, and Chicago-Kent. I've visited Kent and Indiana (both are awesome and visiting UofI end of March). I want to work for a larger firm 100+ attorneys. I've noticed that these schools place similar numbers of students into these size firms--looking at LST reports from 2017. I know that Illinois and Indiana place better in larger firms but that is considering the entire graduating class--- JD required positions and non--JD required. When you limit the population to JD required positions only the difference between the 3 for employment at firms with 100+ attorneys is not that great. My question is do you think it is safe to think about employment in this way? I know the assumption is that I would pass the bar and become a practicing attorney but at the same time I wonder how much of the high numbers in non-jd positions at Kent is do to selection?

Thanks for any input advance

University of Illinois Resume

Hi all,

For those of you who have applied to uiuc law how did you handle the portion of the resume that asks for interest/hobbies/academic pursuits. Did you use a list or or a short paragraph. I could see how hobbies/interest could be listed but I feel like academic pursuits would be best as a paragraph.

Happy Gray (Grey ?) Day!

I wonder if the digital LSAt will be similar to Kahn Academy's program. They have a highlighting feature, however I feel like it can be a time sink especially on RC.

As someone who's been doing 30's-50's, this has me really worried. Is there that big of a difference between the former and 70-80's?

I don’t think the difference is that big. You can still score what you had been scoring on older test. I think the ACs are less cookie cutter and require more time. At least that’s how it was for me. If you are taking the test soon definitely go through 1-2 LR sections from a recent PT untimed or timed to get a feel for it. It could be that it won’t be an issue for you but if it is try in zone in on exactly why just like a regular br.

The first LR section from 85 was pretty hard. In general the more recent LSATS 72-85 have LR sections with longer stimuluses and answer choices as well as more subtle correct answers. So for someone making that transition from older to more recent PTs could reasonably results in a score drop. Especially if you go from 40s to 80s. I would say blind review 85 thoroughly especially the LR portion. Maybe go through PT 83 LR portion and either do it timed or un-timed and get a feel for how the AC are more subtle.

I had a similar situation. My LR score decreased pretty dramatically when I took 85. I think the issue was I was used to moving very quickly through some of the older LRs the answers just seemed more obvious. When I took 85 I tried to keep that same pace and ended up falling for many trap Acs. What has helped me has been just slowing down and reworking my pacing. the Acs are trickier in the more recent PTS so they require more attention. In the end though it is the same game, same tricks, you may just have to read more carefully.

I was in the same position as you. I had about three months of study under my belt. I started with premium then upgraded to ultimate plus for access to the pts and explanations. The highest level comes with PDFs of all the PTs and explanations. So if you don’t have majority of them it’s a good deal. Especially if your in it for the long hall and will be studying for the better part of a year. Also, the lessons on logic and grammar were extremely valuable. Finally being able to reprint Sections is really helpful especially for games.

Is there no possibility of doing both? Do you have to travel to go to this school? Open houses don't take all day. And if you have a typical 2 day weekend, could you do the open house one day and PT on the other?

That said, I don't think it's crucial to take a final PT. You've pretty much made all the gains you're going to make. It's best to take the final week before a test easy. I'd say go to the open house.

Thanks Leah M B. I could take it Sunday however I would not be able to do so until the afternoon- my library does not open until then- and since it is the last test I want to mimic actual conditions as much as possible. So the alternative would be to take it Monday mooring and review it Tuesday - Friday. The problem is this leaves little time for drilling after. But as you said there are little if any gains to be made.

So I have a bit of a dilemma (not really). I am taking the November test next Saturday and I have been drilling RC pretty much this entire week and I am curious to see what improvements, if any, I have made. However, I also have the opportunity to go to an open house for a school that I already applied to and according to my applicaton status am in the "final review stage". I could take the PT during the week but the longer I delay it the less time I have to review it. Yet, if I go to the open house maybe there would be an opportunity to talk to someone on the admissions committee and put a face to the name. Still I am above both medians so I guess chances are already in my favor.

Thoughts ?

Legal theorist : morally legit --> prevent harm to others ---> conform rules and force people to act purely for own good

Author: conform rules ←s→ prevent harm to others

rules force people to act for own good ←s→ prevent harm to others

So it seems that the author is negating the Theorist statement "prevent harm to others ---> conform rules and force people to act purely for own good"

IF AC D had said that "prior to implementation of the 830 start time a significantly higher number of accidents involving teenagers happened durning the morning than the evening compared to after the implementation" would this be correct.

My thinking is that while we know that overall number of teenage accidents has decreased it may be that the the vast majority of accidents that account for the decrease were accidents that involve teens driving in the evening leaving the number of accidents involving teens driving in the morning unchanged.

I found the trainer really helpful with flaws and also NA questions because the two are closely related. From what I understand flaws are NAs. For example if a flaw is exposed it destroys the argument much the same as a negated necessary assumption. Usually ACs for flaw questions say “assumes without warrant”. These unwarranted assumptions are necessary for the validity of the argument. Hence flaws are necessary assumptions. The trainer brings this relationship out. It helped me a lot with flaw and NA questions.

The CC may also have mentioned this. It’s been awhile since I completed the NA and flaw section

If you are missing flaw questions I would check out the Trainer. Understanding flaws and being able to spot them quickly in a stimulus will be helpful when it comes to assumption, weaken, and strengthen questions, also to a lesser extent RRE questions.

If it’s modifiers what I found helps is focusing on the subjects of the premises and conclusion. Is the conclusion addressing the same group? Chances are it’s not. Then when you move to the Ac’s it’s a similar process. Does each AC address the same group as the premises or at least address a group that inferences can be made about. Focusing on the “who” in the stimulus really narrows down which ACs are relevant

Im confused with the wording in AC C Q.19.

As I understand it C says that one can transfer the right to copy an item for profit and that such a transfer is consistent with with TOT. Does the passage imply this? I know that the creator retains the right to copy for profit. But where in the passage does it state or imply that the right to copy for profit can be transferred ?

Call LSAC and find out what's up. The school should have gotten it, no need to do anything. Last year, a few weeks after applying (ugh), a school told me that they never received my LSAT score. Had to call LSAC, who told me they had sent it, called the school back, repeat that back and forth a couple more times, until the school figured out that my score was just entered into a wrong field in their system or something. So, sometimes weird stuff happens during the transfer, I guess. Just call LSAC to confirm it was transmitted, then call the school and ask what they need from you, what's missing, etc.

Are you still in undergrad? Last year I requested my transcripts during my last quarter of undergrad and some schools marked me incomplete bc I did not requested updated transcripts with my last quarter’s grades.

Leah M B Thats pretty much what happen. LSAC sent it and the college received it yet somehow they sent me an email saying they hadn't. Anyhow I called and all is well.

Thanks for the responses !

Help! Transcript problems

I just received an email from a law school I applied to. I submitted my application for this school yesterday. This morning I received an email saying my application was incomplete. Turns out that my undergraduate transcripts were not received but everything else was including my letters of recommendation. Do you have to assign the transcripts like the letters of recommendation in order for them to be sent? Or is there some other process that one needs to do so LSAC can send the transcripts? Or should LSAC just automatically send them?

Has anyone else had this issue? Thanks

lol did anyone else take that survey on LSACs website hoping that if you did your score would be one of the first ones released.....or at least not one of the last.

Ok that makes sense. However wouldn't you have to state that there are no alternate causes? The absence of a cause doesn't imply the absence of all causes.

I'm running out of material so I'm really trying to get the most out of what I have. LOL Thanks for you clarity though.

Sorry I should clarify. I understand that this particular problem's flaw is correlation implies causation. My question was (generally speaking) is it a flaw to assume that because absence of a factor (X) causes something (Y) that the presence of the factor (X) alleviates (Y)?
