I reviewed this question three times and cannot understand how E, "Many people in the US regard the social responsibility of big business as extending beyond providing consumers with fairly priced goods and services" is the correct answer choice?

    Hello,

E is correct because the stimulus states that most consumers believe that both big and small businesses provide consumers with fairly priced goods and services, but that big businesses are only viewed as socially responsible in times of prosperity. Since big businesses are already viewed as providing goods and services to consumers, the fact they are only seen as socially responsible during specific periods must mean that there are more factors accounting for social responsibility than just providing goods and services to customers. Also, we can conclude that many people believe this because many can mean as little as one person, and since the stimulus states that most believe that big businesses provide goods and services to consumers, as well as them only being socially responsible during times of prosperity, we can conclude that at least one person believes there is more to being socially responsible than just providing goods and services to consumers.

D is wrong because we don't know how providing goods and services to consumers affects the appearance of being socially responsible. While it's possible that D could be true, it could be just as likely that providing goods and services to consumers is a necessary condition to appear socially responsible. We don't have enough information to conclude D is correct.
