I have a stack of 14 books and a hefty wooden coat hanger on top. To keep the coat hanger from falling off, I support it with another 6 books (probably a superfluous amount). The coat hanger is oriented such that the long, flat part of the coat hanger is parallel with the length of the stack of books. This way, the curved metal feature hangs over the stack of books. After this has been constructed properly, I place my iPhone on the overhanging metal feature and have the camera face the table. It creates a pretty good image and if you use sturdy enough books, it doesn’t wobble or shake.
Whoaaaa that goose neck holder is awesome!! I haven't seen anyone recommend that, I might get on the recording train now haha. I was too lazy to figure out a way to do it haha.

I use my iPhone, a standard photography tripod, and this little, horizontal arm that I made from some scrap wood. Seems to do the trick!
