I think you’re right on the money at the end - hypotheticals aren’t much help here. A more usefully discussion would be a comparison between specific schools after you’ve been accepted and can see their financialaid pancakes.

I should also add that while I applied for need based aid, given my family's financial situation, it's extremely doubtful I qualified for need based aid. In fact, one of my CCN was explicitly merit only.
