If you don't need it, don't take it. Student loans are really unlike any other kind of loan, save maybe credit cards. They are unique in how they build interest. It's not worth having it on hand to "save".
So you have a 158, that's very good. But if you get another 6-7 points, you can go to UCI with a significant scholarship. I suggest that you keep pushing yourself just that bit further so you can avoid the future pain of loan repayment :disappointed:.

Please don’t go $150k in debt for ndls, it’ll take so long to pay that off. I’m sure it’ll ultimately be more with misc. expenses and of course loan interest on top of that.
For me, budgeting in general for academics is to x2 the cost of schooling. So how much money you should have in your bank will depend on your scholarship, loan, and other cash sources.
