Dental decay (a/k/a caries) · Can signal when hunter-gatherers transitioned to agriculture

This is because decay is linked to a carbohyrdate-rich diet.

Research · Confirms connection between eating carbohydrates and dental decay

Leigh showed decay rate differed between populations that mainly ate meat and those that mainly ate maize (a carbohydrate). On average, the more agriculture, the higher the rate of decay.

Connection not universal · Some nonagricultural populations can have high decay rate

Example: People who ate lots of stone-ground flour had high decay. Some wild plants have high decay-causing potential, too.

Discovery of Ban Chiang remains · Show that people transitioned from hunter-gatherer to agricultural society

Connection between agriculture and dental health · More agriculture tends to result in more dental caries

Factors that can affect caries rate · Wearing down of tooth surface can both increase and decrease caries

Ban Chiang diet · Was diverse, but also included carbohydrates

In theory, more rice and yams in the diet should have meant more caries.

Unexpected result · More caries among early Ban Chiang, even though they had less agriculture than later Ban Chiang

This is probably because even though later people had more agriculture, the diet was still diverse, and there may have been shift from yams to rice, which causes less decay than yams.

Question Type

Stated

The Ban Chiang became increasingly dependent on agriculture over time. But the earlier Ban Chiang had more tooth decay than the later Ban Chiang.

In the last paragraph of Passage A, the author mentions that some nonagricultural populations can have high tooth decay rates.

One distinction between the Ban Chiang and the populations mentioned in Passage A is that the Ban Chiang did have agriculture.

Not supported, because the populations in the last paragraph of Passage A did eat high cariogenic foods.

While the Ban ██████ ███████████ ███ ██████████ ██████ ███ ███████████ █████████ ██ ███ ████ █████████ ██ ███████ █ ███ ████

Supported, because the Ban Chiang had agriculture, but the populations in the last paragraph of Passage A did not.

Not supported, because we don’t know that the Ban Chiang’s diet was “primarily” carbohydrates.

Not supported, because we don’t know the level of tooth wear exhibited by the populations in the last paragraph of Passage A.

Not supported, because the populations in the last paragraph of Passage A did eat highly processed foods.
