The piano has been correctly classified as a percussion instrument. Why? Because classification is based on the action that produces sound, and it is percussion that produces sound in pianos.

The conclusion approves of the piano’s current categorization: “the piano is properly called a percussion instrument, not a stringed instrument.”

This is a modified version of the musicologist’s premise. However, the musicologist doesn’t actually give her opinion on whether this should be the method of classification; she’s only evaluating the piano using this method. It’s possible that her approval of the piano’s classification could be based on correct application of the rule, not approval of the rule itself.

This idea is not discussed in the stimulus.
