Which one of the following ██ █ █████████ ███████ ██ ████ █████████
to argue that ████████ ████████████ ███ ██ ███████████ ██ █████ ██ █████ ██████
Although this is a good description of one of Author A's purposes, it doesn't accurately describe one of Author B's purposes. Author B merely describes Gumbrecht's view about sports and beauty; she doesn't advocate for that view. She doesn't try to convince the reader that Gumbrecht is correct. So "to argue" doesn't capture what Author B tries to do.
to contend that ████████ ████████████ ████ ██ ████ ██ █ ██████████ ████████ ████ ████████ ████████████ ████
Author B doesn't say anything about ceremony in sports or how it compares to ceremony in arts. Although Author B does describe Gumbrecht's view about beauty in sports and arts, there's no description of sports' ceremonial nature.
to contend that ███ █████ ██ ████████ ████████████ ██ ██████ █████████ ██ ████████████ █████████
Author B doesn't say anything about the maintenance of well-defined standards in sports.
Passage B refers to Gumbrecht's view that sport is beautiful, but even if we think that finding sports a legitimate aesthetic experience is an opinion about the value of athletic sports (which we can definitely push back on), that's just one scholar's view. That doesn't say anything about how sports "is" judged. A claim about how sport "is" judged is a claim about how it's typically judged. "This is how society judges sports" vs. "This scholar and I think sports should be judged like this."
(C) also frames Passage B as about arguing that the standards are well-defined. As if someone were claiming that we don't have good standards for judging sports but the author wants to say, no, we do have good standards. But Passage B is more about whether sports is beautiful or just low-brow entertainment. That's different from whether we value sports according to standards or not, or whether those standards are well-defined or only loosely defined.
to compare the ██████████ ██ ████████ ████████████ ████ ████ ██ ████████ ████████████
This is the best answer. Author A compares how people judge excellence in sports with how they do so in the arts. Author B describes Gumbrecht's comparison between how people look for aesthetic pleasure in arts, but don't do so in sports.
to contrast the █████ ██ █████████ ██ ██████ █████████ ████ ████ ██ ███ █████████
Author B doesn't comment on the audience's level of knowledge in sports and art. Although she does describe how audiences in art look for aesthetic pleasure, while audiences in sports don't, Author B doesn't connect this comparison to the level of knowledge possessed by the audiences.
