NYU is maybe the easiest T14 to apply to (though certainly not the easiest to get an acceptance from.) They require very little beyond a personal statement—though you can give them more. Among admissions professionals, NYU is seen as a fairly ‘conservative’ admissions office. It looks for safe applicants who have proven themselves in traditionally strong ways and is more easily scared off by extreme splitters or notable Character & Fitness issues. This is somewhat at odds with its broader reputation for being politically progressive and relentlessly metropolitan.

As a top school in the nation’s largest legal market, NYU obviously offers excellent opportunities. It’s traditionally been ranked below Columbia, though that’s changed recently, and it’s hard to distinguish a clear winner between the two top New York schools. The differences between the two programs are less pronounced in reality than they are in perception: both are huge Big Law feeders that also happen to have some great public interest opportunities. The vibe difference on the undergraduate level is softened by the professionalism of a JD program.
Even compared to the rest of the T14, NYU has stand-out focuses on international, public interest, and tax law.
