  • I had difficulty choosing between A and C. The correct answer seems to be A. Can anyone give a good explanation for why A is correct over C?

      Hey so great question : )

      So lets write our two answer choices in conditional statements:

      A) Meaning ----> Refer to something

      C) Refer to something -----> Meaning

      Now lets take a look at what Joshua is doing:

      He is saying in response to Ashley that "since such words are meaningless...."'

      "such words" is a referential phrasing for what Ashley is calling all these words that she has listed that "don't refer to anything".

      In other words Joshua is thinking: Words that don't refer to something are meaningless.

      If we write this in conditional form: Don't refer to something ----->not meaningful

      Which answer choice tell us this exact statement?

      Answer choice "A"!

      Meaning ----> Refer to something

      If we take a contrapositive of this : don't refer to something -----> not meaningful.

      Which is exactly what we were looking for.

      P.S.

      I was going to wait to answer you question in the morning but then I saw the "Help" (3(/p)

      So Joshua goes from ~referring to something -->meaningless

      If you do the contrapositive you get to (A). Answer choice (C) is the opposite of (A).

      I hope this helps you!
