Help! The explanation mentions that option D is the correct answer. I get that, however, I don't understand how the answer helps the colonials assert their power. In showing a play that depicts friendship, how does that help them assert power?

It's not so much about overtly expressing European dominance over native cultures but about using native customs, rituals, traditions to ingratiate Europeans with the natives, to establish their own legitimacy by using/modifying native culture to project their own influence. Like that queen victoria example given in the passage: she wasn't portrayed as this overbearing monarch but they used "traditional" jamborees to make her rule look more legitimate in the eyes of the natives
