I am retaking the LSAT in October, and figured I would just apply in october/november once my score was released. My question is should I apply when apps open in September with my old score and then have CAS automatically update it, or do future test date and have the score updated once it is in.

That's a classic question, @CalebTurner!
First, you want to make sure what the policy is of the schools that you're applying to. Most schools have a policy where they will not review an app that is otherwise complete IF there's a pending LSAT score (and they'll automatically know if you're registered for the Oct/Nov tests). But some schools (like Michigan) have a policy that such apps are fair game for review. So you just want to double-check before you do anything!
But let's say all your schools would hold your file until that new score comes in. That means you could apply now, or you could apply later. My advice is "what would make you feel better?" Because applying now or later to me - the admissions officer - is a moot point. I won't read your app until that LSAT comes in. But, I think there are some applicants who 1) would feel better getting their apps submitted (it gets the weight off their chest, it keeps them from checking in and tweaking their personal statement when they should really be focused on the LSAT, etc), and 2) there are others who would feel better giving their apps one last check after they're all done with the LSAT. Either is totally fine!
My understanding is to apply earlier and then have CAS send update to the schools. They won’t look at your application until the new score is in but it might put you up higher in the application review queue.
