A lot of seals died from viral diseases in the baltic sea but in Scotland, it was only approximately half of the seals. Baltic sea seals had higher pollutants in their blood. So the higher death rate for baltic seals was due to a higher amount of pollutants in their blood.
A) What does this have to do with pollutants impairing their immune system?
B) that's great but this does nothing to our argument
C) we didn't expect them all to be the same this can be inferred
D) we have to make assumptions about why they are different
E) This strengthens the argument because we expect other marine animals in the baltic sea to die by the pollutants in their blood as well
If a person walks instead of drives there is one less vehicle emitting pollution. If people could walk whenever they could, then pollution would be greatly reduced.
A) If there won't be fewer vehicles how does this help the argument?
B) This is the correct answer because people will walk, then there will be less traffic, then that means there will be less driving and nonmoving cars
C) we already knew this but this doesn't help the argument because we don't know if the gas hog vehicles are the ones who are walking instead
D) this doesn't support the argument?
E) this goes against the argument
Okay, honestly I didn't understand the stimulus at all.
It is difficult to distinguish who created a painting when there is no signature or it is hard to decipher the signature. There is a presumption that the traditional attribution was right due to historical continuity.
We need to strengthen that traditional attribution should not have special weight.
A) art dealers give masters credit for unsigned paintings rather than obscure artists so we should give them special weight.
B) this shows that it should carry special weight
C) why does this suggest that traditional attribution shouldn't carry special weight?
D) this is unrelated to our argument
E) I'm not sure how this has anything to do with it
Amphibians are dying off. Earth’s ozone layer is thinning and has been for 50 years. Ozone is important because it blocks radiation that can kill amphibians. So, the problem that has led to amphibians dying off is the thinning of Earth’s ozone.
A) we already knew UV-B can damage genes - this adds nothing to the argument
B) Amphibian populations are depleting faster than other populations
C) the parts that are depleted badly are over amphibian populations
D) gets rid of the assumption that something else like humans was causing them to die off
E) this matches up with how long the ozone has been depleting
Elected govn't officials supported the arts w/ tax dollars. Even though some taxpayers found some of the arts offensive. No tax payers were treated unjustly.
A) this makes it seem like they were treated unjustly
B) f funded by officials legitimately, then the activity is warranted. Completes the support to the conclusion
C) we don't know if the majority actually supports this
D) we aren't talking about what to do if we are unhappy with it
E) we aren't saying you don't have the right to complain we are just saying you weren't treated unjustly
Greek texts were translated into Arabic when they were of high demand. Arab philosophers had an interest in Aristotle's poetics, but arab poets were not bc they would have wanted to read Homer & it was translated into Arabic.
A) You can infer that there was no demand for them from this statement bc the Medieval Arab poets did have the opportunity to translate the manuscripts of Homer but they didn't do it
B) how does this help us?
C) who cares?
D) has nothing to do with this
E) drama? this is so random
Uses causation logic!!
A local govn't introduced an anti-smoking campaign in the newspaper. One year later the number of people who smoke declined. Clearly it had an effect on the number of people who smoke cigs.
A) We aren't talking about tobacco products just cigs.
B) In order for this to be right, we had to presume the cause but we don't know what caused the decline in people who smoke cigs
C) this doesn't answer the question of why they don't smoke as much
D) This prevents the tax on cigs to be the reason they don't smoke as much so it strengthens the argument that it was the advertisement
E) this has nothing to do with this
Wow this question really tripped me up because at first when I read D I thought it weakened the argument and automatically ruled it out.
Some ppl claim that invention and discovery = self-expression. They ignore that, trivially, anything we do is self-expressive. So unless they can give us a better interpretation of their claim we don't have to take the claim seriously.
A) we aren't saying they are uninteresting we just want them to be more interesting
B) we don't care about what most people think
C) Trivial → /Worthy of Serious consideration - this aligns with the conclusion so it strengthens
D) we care about something that is more interesting
E) this doesn't help
If we are going to solve the homeless problem we need government intervention. Govn't intervention leads to increased raise in taxes.
A) The problem with this is that it doesn’t allow us to conclude that we should raise taxes.
B) we don't know what is sufficient to solve the problem
C) Gov't intervention & raised taxes are necessary conditions for solving the problem of homelessness so they are required to be adopted
D) we don't know what is sufficient to solve the problem
E) we don't know what is sufficient to solve the problem
TV explains why growth in homicide rates began earlier in urban areas. TV sets became popular earlier in these urban households. During that time, urban homicide rates increased. Something similar happened in the rural areas.
A) This is a correlation this doesn't help us establish a causal framework
B) This gives us a cause for it so it strengthens
C) this does nothing
D) this is talking about an individual
E) leisure time??
Grandburg voters will gladly accept the defeat of the current political party in control. It based its claim off a survey that found 59 percent of Grandburg voters the party will be out of power by next year's elections.
A) We don't know how they feel
B) We are trying to see what the voters want not predict what will happen - doesn't help out argument
C) We don't know there is an ill-feeling that's an assumption
D) connects the premise to the conclusion
E) this doesn't tell us anything
When developing a new product line you must have talent. They require a lot of managerial skills but low revenue. Talented managers are assigned only to high revenue product lines causing them to fail. So, the best managers in a company should be assigned to development projects.
A) this weakens the argument
B) how does this support the conclusion?
C) seems to almost weaken the argument
D) Strengthens because it shows that the older projects don’t need talented managers
E) what does this have to do with the argument?
Elephants are going to become extinct due to poaching for the ivory trade, so it should be banned to avoid extinction. Zimbabwe rejects the ban as they rely on culling elephants for income. They say the problem is not the ivory trade but the conservation policies of other countries.
A) Strengthens the argument bc it shows that Zimbabwe is not the problem so why should they be affected by the ban?
B) this does nothing to the argument.
C) sovereignty? lol what
D) very irrelevant
E) They already eliminated illegal poaching within their borders so how does this help?
Grow-again ointment prevents baldness. You should use it five drops a day and there is no benefit for using more than five drops. So offering a manufacturer's rebate won't increase sales and won't be profitable for the manufacturer.
A) doesn't follow the conclusion bc if they think they need more bottles it would increase the sales
B) who cares??
C) if the rebate isn't going to attract new customers then the conclusion that it won't increase your sales makes sense and it strengthens the argument
D) so irrelevant
E) we can produce it cost-efficiently in large quantities. So?
You can't rely on the fishing industry to help the govn't bc it can result in a restriction of net fishing. The govn't should create a program that examines tissue in dead birds to see what type of toxins are in the fish. This gives the fishing industry reason to turn in the birds bc they get the knowledge of what toxins are in the fish.
A) how does this help the argument?
B) who cares if its their first time doing it
C) the govn't needs to have the fishing industry cooperate so it strengthens the argument
D) what does this have to do with the conclusion
E) not relevant
The human brain and mental capacities evolved to help self-preservation. The capacity to make aesthetic judgments is an adaptation. Aesthetic judgments must be evaluated in terms of promoting self-preservation.
A) This states that there were no physical adaptations and part of it was already mentioned.
B) this isn't relevant and does nothing to the argument.
C) We evaluate a person’s aesthetic judgment based on why it was formed, and aesthetic judgment was formed for survival, bridges that gap.
D) ok? so what
E) we are talking about an individual not a species.
I feel the same way. I knew A was the answer the minute I read it.
Student took 12 classes and got a B in majority of them, so the student will probably get a B in the new course they are taking.
A) if she's being tutored her grade might actually improve
B) it's not a specific subject matter she gets a B in almost all subjects
C) student isn't changing any study habits
D) if the student is a straight B student then it's not likely they will stray from that norm
E) if she got a B in a related course she probably won't do any better on the next one bc its a continuation of that course
Insects use UV light for food sources & mating sights by sensing patterns of UV light. G spiderwebs reflect UV light. Insects are attracted to G webs because of the patterns of UV light reflected off it.
A) we are talking about G webs that reflect UV not ones that don't
B) silk? not relevant
C) garden spider? who cares about the specific type of spider
D) this doesn't strengthen it seems to almost contradict the conclusion
E) show they are attracted to the G web with UV light which strengthens our argument
Was so torn between A and C and of course picked the wrong one. The regime made up of ordinary ppl seeking paradise. The regime killed ppl to reach its goal of paradise but later found out its unrecognizable. Some of the ppl of regime Q are murderers.
A) we aren't arguing whether the murder was justified we are arguing the mere fact that it was murder. This just assumes it was murder.
B) we aren't talking about fanaticism.
C) this strengthens our argument that people of regime Q were in fact murderers.
D) inhumanity??
E) we aren't arguing what constitutes fanaticism.
Kim: fetal monitors basically do nothing and they cost more so we should discontinue them.
Anders: I disagree they have helped us know warning signs that we wouldn't have been taught if it wasn't for fetal monitors.
A) this doesn't work because they provide the same information
B) they do provide information that is potentially useful it just happens to be the same information as stethoscopes
C) This strengthens Kim's argument that electric fetal monitors should not be used
D) Dr. Kim doesn't justify the cost
E) This doesn't help explain why we shouldn't use them
Replace gas with methanol which doesn't produce benzene, but it produces formaldehyde. So the proposal has little merit.
Guess who didn't read the question stem right lol me.
A) what does this have to do with methanol?
B) that's great but doesn't do anything to our argument
C) this doesn't matter for the argument
D) supports the argument that we should use methanol over gasoline
E) would go against the environmentalist's argument
Microprinting vs. special ink. The special ink is more expensive but easier to identify than microprinting so it should be used instead.
A) additional negative toward microprinting which strengthens our argument that special ink should be used instead
B) we want the method used to be prevalent
C) this would weaken it
D) who cares
E) this a pro for microprinting so they doesn't strengthen our argument
I don't know if it's just me but this question and explanation made no sense to me I am so lost
