Did anyone else arrive to the conclusion a different way?

I initially ran out of time and during BR I was able to get the answer correct.

I simply focused in on the last bit of the first sentence which said "a seemingly false assumption" so I asked myself what is this seemingly false assumption? I read the sentence before it..."that human beings are seemingly unselfish so it cannot work?"

but this did not make any sense to me because if they were unselfish shouldn't the implementation of the welfare system work? (unless of course other factors would not allow it to work)

So I just relied on what the rest of the argument uses as support further down in the stimulus... no, they are selfish so it cannot work... is how I chose A... that first sentence trips me up and it still does not make any sense to me!

If anyone can please breakdown sentence 1 for me and #help me see it through, it would be greatly appreciated.

I was really hung up on AC A and C because A really was convincing, then I kept re-reading and mapping it out and the way it was worded just made me skeptical of the AC. So I went with C which is clearly wrong but what I deduced was that the necessary condition in the argument being that— everybody would be using the cold remedy, I thought it to be a condition necessary for it to be effective for the cold sufferer guy to push forth his argument.

He did say in this hypothetical scenario if it were true that it is effective then everybody would be using it, but he negates the necessary condition so at this point I knew it was wrong and wish I could've added to the answer choice wording by adding "showing that a condition necessary to establish a claim have not been met." Since the condition for being an effective remedy was the usage of remedy by those who get colds.

Did anybody else think about this answer choice in this way?
