    Its a SA questions so youd want to approach this question by finding an A.C that would ensure the conclusion must be true.

    By concluding the game must have originated sometime between approximately A.D. 1000 and Cortez’ arrival, the author is only assuming this because they had rubber balls since 1000 AD ... but what if they played the game with something other than a rubber ball? if that were the case than we dont know if game started between 1000-1519 AD, the game could have started way before that with a rock for all we know. thus (D) is the correct assumption to ensure the conclusion must be true. Hope that helps.
