I've also heard the opposite. & by looking at each passage to determine which one has the least questions/which passage will interest you will actually become a time sink. Therefore, many people do not recommend this technique.

I have found that some notation is effective for me but I generally write in the margins of things I read. It depends on what kind of a reader you are.
Agree heartily with @"Quick Silver" — @Jengibre actually introduced me to this idea I believe and I have been using it ever since. WOW. Absolutely stellar focusing technique. Was astonished by the difference it made.
