It might be good to signupfor it and just go ahead and take it then so that you don't lose momentum. But you could also take the October administration without necessarily being considered late.
If you haven't done so already, signupfor the LSAC Candidate Referral Service (CRS). This is how law schools can find you and reach out to you. You can also call or email the admissions offices and just ask for a fee waiver.
Don't take it until you're ready. If you're serious about 170 as a target score than I'd say your average needs to be at least within 3 points of a 170 and ideally above that. Once you're there, then go ahead and signupfor a take.

@jankley I don’t think there’s any question that there will be another Flex date to signupfor this summer! Haven’t heard any speculation at all that they would outright cancel July. Has anyone else?
I believe the deadline was 11:59pm June 6th. You have to call/send an email for cancellation with your LSAC Account # to receive a voucher for your next exam (it will show up when you signupfor whichever exam).
Once you signupfor the LSAT Flex, you schedule what time you want to take it via ProctorU, the online proctoring service that actually administers the exam
