Word Detective

Strong RC readers don't stall on a word they don't know: they read the clues around it, the examples that follow, the contrast a sentence sets up, the way an argument turns, and work out what the word has to mean. That sense for context keeps one unfamiliar word from stopping a whole passage. This game trains you to read a word's meaning from its context.

How it works. Each case shows a short passage with one word blacked out and four possible meanings. You read the clues around the blank and pick the meaning that fits.
