Save your main point questions for last!

The best way to improve at Reading Comprehension is to selectively choose the order in which you read the passages and answer questions. The more passive we are in the reading process, the less we are able to take deductions from the passage into the questions. Our brain will subconsciously understand a main point better a few minutes removed from your analysis. Of course, there is no one-size-fits-all strategy for any section on the LSAT. Try out this strategy to see if your brain can benefit from that extra time to process!

Think of Reading Comprehension as a treasure hunt.

The LSAT test writers know how we read a passage. They know we go into a passage hoping to understand every single word and that we try to memorize facts along the way. This is what makes Reading Comprehension so difficult. We need to approach an RC section very differently from book assessments in primary school.

Think of Reading Comprehension as an explorer hunting for treasure. In her journey, our treasure hunter is not trying to memorize the color of the tree leaves or other small details. The skilled treasure hunter makes a map to know where all of our clues are located. Commit to memorizing where everything is in the passage rather than what is in the passage itself.

This gives us some great potential when it comes to skipping strategies. Starting with direct reference questions, following with inference questions, and ending with the main point maximizes the time we have to process the passage.

Ultimately, many strategies will work for different students. The most effective way to identify the right strategy for you is to experiment. Any new method you attempt will not feel perfect right away. When you try out a new method, don’t expect to see a score improvement immediately. Your goal should be to identify a method of analysis that makes you feel in control of the section that you can work with going forward.
