Admission Process

User Avatar Ethan Madore

Like other truly top schools, Chicago makes decisions on a more relaxed timeline and is less concerned with maximizing yield. It interviews the candidates it’s interested in and, if you get an interview, odds are about 40% that you’ll be admitted.

Ann Perry leads Chicago admissions and has given several interviews on the admissions process. She recommends writing a Why Chicago based on specific, deep research into the school. For some candidates, applying to Chicago is a little like applying to a PhD program: clearly staking out your intellectual interest and identifying the faculty that will help you pursue it.

What's actually different about UChicago's application

  • They’re relaxed about personal statement length, but we strongly recommend sticking to two pages
  • You can submit your Harvard perspective statement as one of the optional statements, though traditional diversity/inclusion language may go less far at Chicago than other top schools. Make sure that you come across as excited to engage with other viewpoints (particularly those outside traditional moderate progressive ideologies.)
  • You should write a Why Chicago that outlines your own personal/intellectual brand and connects it to what the school offers.
  • Chicago wants you to specify hours-per-week on your resume. Don’t forget to do this.
  • You have the option to write a statement expressing your interest in a Doctoroff Business Leadership Program or in doing a joint JD/PhD. Unless you’re deeply familiar with these options and have a well-considered plan for how they fit with your narrative and plans, we recommend not submitting them. They muddy your narrative if you’re not a great fit for them—and most students aren’t.
