Does anyone know the difference between "reserve" and "hold" waitlists? My friend and I got these two different ones. I asked the admissions office but they didn't tell me outright which one is better or worse-- they just said that they're "different."

Not sure if this helps but usually a "hold" is more favorable than a regular waitlist. The hold usually means that your application is being set aside for further review as opposed to a reserve which probably means that you're there just waiting in case of a drop-out from another student.
