I have several abbreviations on my personal statement that otherwise would be an entire sentence.
E.g NVCC for Northern Virginia Community College.
I feel like spelling all these out take up too much of precious real estate. Is this acceptable??

Yeah when writing anything, if you have an acronym that isn't immediately known by everyone, spell it out the first time with the abbreviation in parentheses. Then you can use the abbreviation every time after that.
I think it may be a good idea to put in parentheses after the first abbreviation what it stands for, then abbreviate only after that.
