😖 Frustrated

How to lock in

Hi all,

I've been struggling with staying focused even for small drills for extended periods of time (30min lol) periods of time and it is genuinely so frustrating. Anyone else have trouble with focus? I get distracted so easily it makes me doubt myself and future career prospects :(

I had the same problem and its likely because your attention is used to jumping around, thinking of something else while doing anything. Its really common to be like that now. I notice it when reading books the most. I had to make big changes like not listening to anything or looking at my phone while working, reducing multitasking. Limiting my utube watching to 1 hr total on the weekend. Deleting social media apps from my phone and having to re-download to check once a week. Deleting reddit. For me its not one solution just while I'm studying. Its a gradual process of training my brain to calm down and focus. Locking in is incredibly hard if you have scattered your attention for years. I wish someone told me that earlier.

If you're having trouble staying focused for even 30 minutes, your difficulties with drilling are more likely a symptom of a larger problem. if I were you i would first figure out what's distracting me. Phone/social media? intrusive thoughts? Poor sleeping habits and vitamin deficiencies?

Once you've identified what's causing the problem figure out a solution that works for you. For example i had trouble getting distracted w my phone so I cut down my use of it in general and when i would study i would put it in a drawer somewhere so I couldn't go reach for it mindlessly.

I asked this same question on LSAT reddit like 6 months ago and the responses literally bullied me into locking in lol. I can't even complain tho bc it worked, I never had an issue focusing after that.

hi friend! i struggle focusing too. i want to take the LSAT in january, but i don't think i'll be able to sit through it.

there's an app that hank green made called "focus friend" that i find very helpful!! you can set it for a max of 120 minutes, and it pretty much locks down every "unessential" app such as social media and things like that. i think focusing is harder said than done for a lot of us, and i genuinely wish you luck!! i think thats the hardest part about the LSAT, since its not just about whether or not you can discern the logic but its also a test of endurance. its not made to be an easy test, so please know you aren't alone!!

A few things that work for me...thinking of why I am doing this! I have pictures of loved ones on my desk where I study to keep myself motivated as I know they believe in me. I wear more formal, yet comfortable clothing when studying to feel good and more in confident in myself. I take breaks as I need and step away from my screen when really frustrated at a Q or problem to think and move. you got this! just find what works for you and build on that. I have realized this takes time, and being locked in for the whole time is not reasonable. breathe, you got this.

I look up the upper level of lawyer job postings on Indeed and remind myself that those numbers can be obtainable if I keep pushing myself. I also remind myself that others are pushing themselves harder and if I want to get what I want I need to push myself and want it more than anyone else.

sometimes i look at really nice apartments at my top choices for law school to inspire me (i live at home lol). or i watch diml's of attorneys (i really like @tiffthelawyer). also, i leave the house to study. i pack candy/tea or something else i can look forward to during breaks. try putting your phone/other distractions in another room. dw everyone gets distracted easily! try doing small things each study session to see if it helps :)

Struggling with the same. Had to make it fun. I have like a lava lamp and candles as someone told me to "romanticize" studying has helped slightly with my focus on studying. For full test days its clear environment though!
