My low res summary: Ginsburg: Video = Good

I see the word 'Good' and immediately ask: Why? So, 'Good' triggers my mind to recall her main reasons WHY she thought it was good. The low res summary has been SO helpful at getting me to summarize in a way that is super efficient. I can't believe how well it works!

"But Weiner's opponents contend that his views betray a certain nostalgia for the idea of the 'noble savage.' "

The explanation says Weiner's view reflects noble-savage nostalgia. The text says his views betray noble-savage nostalgia.

    What is the meaning here?

@AOnifade Saying that something "betrays" a view means that it shows or demonstrates that view.

"Your facial expression betrays your anger." = "Your facial expression shows that you are angry."

For difficult paragraphs like these, is it beneficial to read the first sentence or two then jump to the concluding sentence? I feel like the low res was a summary of these.

    My low-res summary.

    Ginsburg:

    W.Tech (doesn't equal) W.Culture.

    + opp (to) strengthen culture

This was more helpful for me to remember there were 2 main points she covered in this paragraph.

I'm finding that my low res summaries for this passage are just a little bit longer than what the instructor in the video is producing. Each of my paragraphs' summaries are still under 10 words though. That's still alright more or less, yeah?

Yes, that's fair (as long as you're not writing it out, in which case up to 10 words might be a bit too long).

From my personal experience of reading so many freaking art critiques, they have a lot of phrases to connote "the existence/the being" of something - airy words. "Ontology", the study of "being", almost always accompanies with the Western notions. A lot of art debates stem from how Western ideas proliferate and unfortunately overshadow the actual histories of art (colonial gaze, Eurocentrism, "modern" art, male gaze, society of spectacle, capitalism, etc.). And that nothing exists in a vacuum. Mediums/tools will always have a meaning even if the artist intended or not. For example, in this video, Weiner and Ginsburg are arguing over the use of a camera and its significance. Here, the camera is being associated with machinery which tadah - a Western notion! This is definitely generalization but the popular discourses of art can be boiled down to Western values vs. non-Western notions.

    My summary:

    a) Ginsburg: western tech ≠ western culture

    b) Ginsburg: video tech preserves culture

The word "invaluable" is so goofy.

Weiner's opponents: CONTEND Weiner's views go against a nostalgia of the idea of the noble savage.

Other side of divide (Faye Ginsburg group) CONCEDE NO western object entered cultural circulation since 15th cent has been neutral - so excuse? but its a bit more than boilerplate (?) technological determinism (the ontology in prior para?) that using a cam makes it western.

Unlike Weiner, Ginsburg maintains non-western/indigenous ppls use western media WITHOUT adopting conventions - stay true to culture.

they think these films can be used for resurgence.
