Has anyone taken the exam abroad during a vacation?

I just got my score for the June exam. 159. Not happy. I was practicing at 172… so you can imagine my disappointment. I got about 3 hours of sleep in two days because of nerves, I guess. And the tropical storm hit our testing facility, knocking out the electric and causing a big commotion. I got totally frazzled. Because I was practicing so well, I was hoping to take it once and move on. Obviously, I have to retake.

Anyways, I am left with retaking in September or December, wanting to apply for Summer/Fall 2017. Problem is that I will be in Europe for all of September (my brother is getting married in Italy). I can take the exam in Rome, which leaves December if I am still not happy with my performance. Or, I can wait until December, but that means applying later than I had wanted (I know a lot of schools make scholarship determinations as they receive applications, and are on rolling schedule), with a worst case of taking it again in February.

Long story short – has anyone taken the exam abroad while travelling? I know it isn’t ideal, but I have limited options. I can study from now until Sept 4 full-time and study part-time while I am abroad, as needed until the Sept 24 exam, but I have no idea what to think about taking it abroad. I am in Europe until October 5. Being in the middle of vacation may be good for me (given that I think my poor performance was due to anxiety and stress, in addition to storm), but it could also totally suck.

My GPA was 3.86 from a good undergrad but I’m very worried the LSAT will hinder my scholarship opportunities!

Any input? Anyone ever do this before? I know it’s not the norm, but I’m sure someone has had a similar situation…

Abroad experimental

Did anyone else take the test abroad? I had two LG sections. Was the Ghana/India/France question real or experimental?

I'll be attending - my first! I want to listen in on the RC part in particular, I found two of them to be extremely hard. Any idea if that will be earlier or later in the meeting?

I wasn't going to submit any from professors, but the two I got and was planning on using were from the managing attorney and director of administration at the law firm I have worked at for 6 years, saying they would hire me as an attorney in a heartbeat and that they'd love for me to go back and work for them post-law. Is this a big mistake? I didn't keep in touch with any of my undergrad professors and was abroad for my entire junior year. Senior year I worked with some good professors, but just didn't make a point to form a relationship with them beyond the classroom (should have, but can't go back now).

I thought my LORs were strong - anyone have input on this?

I'd definitely take the most recent tests and review them thoroughly before your Dec exam. I didn't do many of the 70s, because of time and because I was PTing so well in the 60s, but I definitely think that was a bad idea. The material seemed different and the language more complex. I'll be taking again in December and focusing a lot on 71-78

@ I'm in the same boat! Took it in Europe. I thought I had done way better, but remember having a whole section I had to erase on. That said, my score was below yours and would be more worth paying for. Still a tough call. Good luck!

@ and @ I totally feel you. I got a 160, and average 168-172 on my PT. Got 172-176 on the PTs in the 60s. Have been studying for 8 months. Test anxiety? I guess. First time I took it I definitely had anxiety. This time didn't seem so bad, but I took an undisclosed version from Europe and can't even confirm that it wasn't a bubbling mistake! I knew I wouldn't see the test, but I thought I'd get to see what sections I got wrong at least. Geez. 160 gets me in easy to safety schools (I have a pretty solid GPA and good softs), but more than anything, I'm just surprised with this even happening...

Even though I wish everyone could do as well as they hope, it is comforting to know that it isn't happening to only me...

@ I'm thinking about doing this (applying now, supplementing for finances later). I have 3.9 GPA from top 30 school, but seem to struggle with the LSAT on test day. I practice at 168-174, but got160 twice on test day. I think its nerves... I'm surprised, really. Doesn't make sense, but anyways, I'm in the same boat, of wanting to know if I should take again. If you're not looking for T14 and have a good resume, etc. I'd say apply and supplement later, for scholarships. I think others would disagree in saying you should wait until you get your ideal LSAT, but I don't see the harm in applying now if you're already within a good GPA/LSAT range for your ideal schools.

@.rizeq Makes sense to me. He passed suddenly two days after the exam. Could definitely be a reason for the delay.

I've dealt with bouts of insomnia for the past year and I'm envious of your 30 minutes to fall asleep... mine is often 3-4 hours. Stress and anxiety play a huge factor in insomnia, and insomnia conversely plays a huge factor in anxiety. It affected my testing in June when I wasn't able to sleep for two full days.

Anyways, what has worked for me throughout the past 6 months (minus the freak out in June) is a total reshape of my diet and a consistent meditation routine, in additional to frequent exercise. When I say a reshape of diet, I mean cutting out all junk food and adding in the much needed greens and natural foods we all too often forget are vital to our health. Get rid of the refined sugar and the processed food. Make sure to get all your vitamins. I started taking a few natural supplements as well.

The more pressure you put on yourself about the test, the worse it will be. It is important to prepare and to study, but to realize that it is only a test. I started taking that approach and realized that I score way better without the pressure. My advice to you would be to stop pushing back the test and to just go for it. Be OK with taking a sleeping pill the night before, but recognize that the insomnia is likely a result of something else (stress, vitamin deficiency, poor diet, poor sleeping habits, sleep anxiety, depression, etc.)

Best of luck. I know what it feels like.

@ and @ - In case you are wondering, I received confirmation from the school that they will in fact reimburse both LSAT and CAS. Definitely a good reason to apply. You can make all admission decisions after!

@ Yeah, it'll be frustrating for me to not be able to review the test if I do take it abroad, but I guess understand why they do it. Thanks for your input!

@, @ Have either of you done this? I am considering writing them now as their website does still list this as a benefit, but I am hesitant about them then being overly aggressive post-request. Seems almost too good.

Are many of you applying for the December LSAT before the Oct 18 deadline, despite not knowing your score until, perhaps, the 20th? I'd love to not take it again if my score is good enough, but the registration deadline gets me worked up. I know they offer a refund, but I'm curious about what the rest of you are doing...

@ The testing location in Rome is the Istituto Mater Dolorosa at Via Alessandro Torlonia, 14, 00161 Roma, Italy. Looks like a preschool (?). If you find who took it in Rome, can you ask if it is the same location?

Thanks!

@ es, but two per year

@

haha.

I thought it was 3 takes within 2 years, regardless of if you take them all within the same year or not. Am I mistaken?

Another interesting thing: I took the Sept exam in Rome and the watercolor/oil setup really resembled one I had then (I had two), about Ghana and other countries. I wouldn't think they'd recycle an idea that fast, but who knows!

I don't remember anything about companies blaming until their was algae on LR. I thought the Corporations trading buildings game was super tough. Didn't even get through it. Luckily it was my last game and I just bubbled. Anyone else draw a blank?

@ Thanks for your input! I totally believe you that the 7sage is a better program for a better price. Plus, it comes with a sense of community. It's not that I don't think the Ultimate would be beneficial - I just don't how much more so it will be than some of the others, since I think a lot of my poor performance on the last exam was lack of prep not on the material side, but more on the self-discipline side and the psychological readiness, if that makes any sense.

Honest opinion about which program to buy?

I've been looking at this website and have been contemplating whether or not to buy the program, and if so, which to buy. I know I am asking the 7Sage crew and I hope no one is offended by my question - I'm just trying to figure out what may work best for me, while also keeping in mind cost! That said, I am impressed with the sense of community and the approach of this site, so I'm definitely leaning towards getting a course/program, I just don't know which one.

I did well studying on my own, using Powerscore & Kaplan materials as well as prep-tests, but I never did the Blind Review method, which I first heard about on here, and I think it is a good way to look at studying for the LSAT. I'll definitely implement. Anyways, I was practicing at about 168-172 but I admit that I wasn't always as strict as I should I have been with timing myself, so its possible I went over a few minutes on a few exams, which could have bumped up my score. Unfortunately, I had an anxiety attack prior to my June 2016 test and didn't sleep for two days. I've never had test anxiety and the experience was totally foreign, but it is was it is. I got a 159. Totally bummed, but was fearing even worse. I've gone back and taken parts of the June test and performed way better, even acing the LG part (which I often do, but got a -6 on the June 2016 test). I blame the lack of sleep and test anxiety, but I still know there are skills I can improve on and dedication/hard work with a good prep-course would do me good.

Basically, I feel like I know a lot of the core principals, but need some reinforcement. Which program would be best? I am retaking in either Sept or December for 2017 admission.

Any advice? I'm not a beginner, but I also don't think I need to do the entire full course. Looking for some input. Thanks, guys!!!

Depends on their condition. If you have a bunch of practice tests that aren't actually written on, I think they'd sell easily. I'd even been interested in any newer tests that aren't all written up!

@ Indian Tech (a new law school) was offering that if you applied they would pay for your LSAT, but now they are offering a free visit if accepted

Dang! I'd rather get the free LSAT than the visit. Though I'm not sure what the visit entails. Will look into it out of curiosity! Thanks for your responses.

While studying is time consuming and that definitely needs to be considered in your decision, I think that your mention above is a good point. Sometimes the anxiety and worry of the exam ends up taking a toll. I know it did for me!
