@ElizabethPadrnos I thought that too, but then I realized that "fail" is the main verb and "bacteria" isn't being failed, so it's not the object of the sentence; rather, "bacteria" would be the object of the modifier "to kill" which is a little more technical than this course seems to address. Hopefully that makes sense.
Would it be reasonable for example 3 to infer the following? The empty lot will more likely be developed as a community center than it will anything else.
