I have gotten admitted to my safe school, but I got put on a wait list for my preferred school. Are there any suggestions to up my chances?

How many schools did you apply to? Also, once you're on the wait-list all you can do is wait and eventually submit a LOCI (letter of continued interest). I also recommend that you avoid pestering admissions officers as they may just reject you to get you off their back.
Definitely JUST wait. Do not email, call or check on your status. Don't ask if they rank the waitlist. Schools often will update you so it's a "don't call us, we will call you" situation. Good luck.
