I just started FPing the earlier games, and I could have sworn I saw a rule substitution in PT1 through PT6.
Not to my knowledge. I believe the earliest prototype of a rule substitution question (which formally began on PT 57 and continue to present day) is from PT February 97.

PT 81 has two of them. ;]
I believe it first appeared in PT57. Here is the list by PowerScore up until 2016: http://www.powerscore.com/gamesbible/logic-games-rule-substitution/index.cfm
(June 2009 LSAT = PT57)
They also appeared in 2017.

Yeah I looked back, and rule substitution occurs but no equivalence.
