Hi everyone! I'm a bit early, but the Sunday I promised is here on a Saturday night, so here is Part 2 of my very long post, this time about how I used my database system to study more intentionally, and also about the 10-week study group I am opening. For those you want to read Part 1 first, here is the link Part 1 First, I want to talk about how I studied for LR and RC. This is going to be another long post, so if you only want to know about the study group, go to no.3. If not, hope you enjoy the whole story! 1. Logical Reasoning Like I mentioned in Part 1, I was stuck in the low 150s for a long time, even after subscribing to 7Sage. When you study for 6–7 hours a day, 5–6 days a week, for almost a full year, you end up seeing a lot of questions. The frustrating part was that I kept looking at the questions I missed over and over again because everyone says you have to review your wrong answers. But without taking away any real lesson from each question, I realized I was just memorizing the answers. So I knew I had to change my plan. I was confused about why I was not improving, so I started writing down, as precisely as possible, why I missed each question. More specifically, I asked myself: Why did I struggle with this question? After doing this for a full week, I started to see that my reasons for missing questions were repetitive. Since I used to work as a researcher at a think tank before I quit my job, a database was honestly the first thing that popped into my mind. So I made a template using Google Sheets and started putting down the exact reason I got each question wrong. For a better understanding, I’ll give you an example using Main Conclusion questions with an image at the end of how the data base looked like. Of course, every question type has its own reasoning pattern. For Main Conclusion questions, I mainly had four reasons why I was missing them: a. I failed to find the conclusion. b. I misread the stimulus or the answer choice. c. I completely blacked out. (literally, I had trouble processing the words in the stimulus.) d. It turned out that the number one reason I was missing Main Conclusion questions was not that I had no idea what the conclusion was. In many cases, I actually knew the conclusion and even predicted the answer correctly, but then I misread the answer choice and picked the wrong one. So I asked myself another basic question: Why am I constantly misreading the answer choices? When I looked closely at the wrong answers I was choosing, I realized that they often looked very similar to sentences mentioned in the stimulus. But if you read them carefully, they were actually sending a completely different message. Based on that diagnosis, I adjusted my strategy and focused on two things: 1. Find the main conclusion in advance. 2. Double-check the answer choice before moving on. Because this was the biggest reason I was missing this question type, once I fixed it, I saw real improvement. I barely missed Main Conclusion questions after that (although I know we are technically not “supposed” to miss Main Conclusion questions in the first place. :(. BAD KID ) 2. Reading Comprehension RC is my weak spot, and honestly, it still is. I have never scored -0 on RC, and I am pretty sure that most of the questions I missed on my official LSAT were from RC. The best RC score I ever got was around -5. So let me share why I struggled with RC and what I think I should have done earlier. Just letting you know in advance: I made two databases for RC. At some point, I was constantly scoring around -5 to -2 on LR, but my average RC was around -11, and later it even got worse. I was confused, stuck, and had no idea what to do. For a while, I kind of gave up on RC and tried to focus on getting LR as close to perfect as possible. I thought that even with a bad RC score, I could still break into the 160s if LR carried me. Welp, that failed. After almost a full year of studying and somehow getting worse at RC, I realized that I had no real sense of what RC was actually asking me to do. I was not fully understanding the passage, I did not always have a clear concept in mind, and I was not carefully reading or comprehending the answer choices. That made me become much more precise with RC. First, I wanted to know why I was struggling just to read the passages. So I made a database for the passages themselves. Here are the reasons I came up with: a. I could not summarize each paragraph. b. I got stuck on complex sentences. c. I thought I understood the passage, but I could not find the main point. d. I blacked out (the same issue I had in LR.) e. I physically did not have enough time to read the passage. At first, I ruled out the last reason because I wanted to focus more on comprehension than timing. With the other four reasons, the conclusion was very clear: I could not summarize each paragraph, I got stuck on complex sentences, and I could not find the main point. So basically… a complete disaster. No wonder I was missing so many questions! Hahaha. Once I realized that my real problem was that I could not clearly see the basic structure of the passage, that became my focus. I practiced summarizing each paragraph, identifying the main point, and not getting obsessed with one difficult sentence. Doing that alone helped reduce my reading time by around 20 seconds per passage, which was small but meaningful for me. Then I moved on to the question side of RC. For example, with Principle/Generalization questions, I again wrote down the exact reasons I was getting them wrong. The conclusion was that I often failed to identify the principle from the beginning. This took a lot of practice because I struggled so much with finding the principle clearly. I am still not perfect at this, but at least now I have a structure in my mind when I approach those questions. Again, the whole point of this database was to understand exactly what kind of mistakes I was making. And I genuinely think it worked because it forced me to stop studying vaguely and start diagnosing my mistakes more honestly. 3. Join My Study With Me Group Because of my low GPA, I know I need to aim as high as possible for scholarship purposes, so I am taking my last shot for September. This time, I thought a study group would be more supportive and motivating. As the name of the group says " Study With Me" this group will mainly be me sharing my daily study plan, my results, and how I am adjusting my strategy along the way. You can follow my plan exactly, or you can adjust it based on your own level and schedule. Because I spent so much time building these databases and because I genuinely care about the system I made, I decided to charge a small fee of $35 to join the study group. The reason I kept the fee low is because I am also studying for the test myself, so this will not be one-on-one tutoring. Instead, it will be a group study space where I share my study plan, explain how I use the databases, drop strategies that worked for me, and help everyone stay committed through September. The $35 is a one-time payment, and you will receive all the databases I used so that you can use them with me. But I can say with confidence that it can help you become much more aware of the mistakes you are making, especially the avoidable ones — and that is what helped me study better.
