Chronograph Watch allowed?

tn7sagertn7sager Alum Member
edited July 2017 in General 68 karma

Hi,
Does anyone know if a Chronograph watch is allowed on the test? They have analog automatic versions(aka nondigital). I am about to start practicing PTs and would like to know before I practice with it and acclimate. I have seen past discussions that it is up to the test proctor. So is there no way to know ahead of time if my particular test proctor will decide to let me use a legal item?

Thanks!

What is the specific watch? I can see them deciding whether or not you can use it depending on the model.... So long as it is not digital, I don't see why it being a chronograph watch would cause an issues. For god's sake, the 180 watch is legal, haha.

It's a Tag. There isn't even a battery in the watch let alone digital so I don't know how it could be illegal according to the rules. Like I said I'm just a little paranoid about practicing RC in particular with it and being told I can't use it.

I honestly think you'd be fine. Unfortunately, even if you email them my experience has been that they tell you they really can't give you a 100% answer and refer to the guidelines we already know. I'd bring a cheap-o watch just in case. But, im 99.9% sure you'll be fine if it's a standard tag heuer chrono.

You MAY NOT bring into the test center or use any of the following:
digital watches, alarm watches, beeping watches, calculator watches, chronograph watches (digital or nondigital)
This is copied from the Lsac website.
I wonder if the 180 is even allowed any more.

God damn..... I guess this answers it then. The 180 watch was used by friends over the last several administrations and I know for a fact a friend used a Chrono watch in Sept 2016.

Regardless, thank you for citing this @rchastain0809. That's why I switched over from the 180 watch, sold it, and got a $12 Amazon Casio Men's MRW200H-7EV Sport Resin Watch.

JY Recommends it, it's cheap, and does the job. The rotating bezel is nice and the numbers and markings are nice and big to be able to see easily.

I suppose with the advent and growing popularity of smart watches the LSAC is being more cautious. I've seen posts on Reddit of people being turned away for using 180 watches even though others have had no issues and they tend to follow all regulations.

I think they should should sell standard LSAC timers that are cheap and just have everyone use those to avoid any issues. Little digital countdown timers for a few bucks. Seems like it would be worth it it avoid situations like this.

I think "chronograph watches" may have been added after September 2016. I am pretty sure I did not see it before. Hopefully someone can confirm if this is actually a change in the LSAC policy.

Anyways, I'm getting myself one of those Casio watches....! Thank you for this post!

Awesome! Yeah, I have used a few different ones. The one JY shows in the video is basically the same, it's just the numbers instead of dots on the face. It's not a huge deal, but in the heat of the moment it can be confusing to have the extra number instead of just the numbers on the rotating bezel and dots where the numbers are on the MRW-200H-1BV. Either way, both beat the fuck out of the 180 Watch. And the Mastermind watch was so expensive to manufacture and shitty they discontinued after like 6 months. For christ sakes, I got my 180 watch and realized the background of the face was PAPER. Like it would move and always be a little off.

I'll obsess over pencils, pens, and sharpeners. However, LSAT specific watches were by far the dumbest thing I spent money on during this test. Ironically, the $30 Perfect Score watch I got was the best of them all. The only issue was that the pin was so hard to pull out to reset the time, especially for a guy with shorter nails, that it was too risky for me to use.

Haha-- they are cheap AF my man. It seems like from the review --- and no exaggeration --- 50% of 180 watches have some sort of issue and their customer service is basically non-existent. They're cheap watches marketed towards idiots like me who thought it was some silver bullet.

It has NOT been confirmed that the 180 or Mastermind watches are banned at this time. You can call and ask the LSAC, but as I have done, they give a flippant reply and essentially tell you to refer to the rules and regulations on the website. Which in the case of the 180 watch is unclear at this time.

I'll also try to email them again and see if anything is changed. I do know several people who used it in June and did not have any issue.

As far as I could tell, the list that is on the website doesn't match the less descriptive one given to the people actually checking your bag before entering the room. When they read the rules they only mention analog (non-digital) for example. That said, probably not worth the risk. Just get a normal watch and get used to looking for 35/10/45.

Also, is it really a rule that I can't wear my watch during the test and have to put in on the desk in front of me? Or was that just my inexperienced proctor? (At one point they told us to put our watches in our bags under our seat... that was a very charged couple of seconds)

I'll add this for what it's worth. The rule about chronos WAS on the website prior to June (I believe the change was made after March according to WBTM so this isn't new BUT and this is very important it was NOT on the rules for our tickets. I asked about it at my testing center to make sure my watch was ok and they checked their book too and it was fine. I had 3 watches with me.

So... this isn't new as in a new rule after June 2017, it was up prior to June but not on tickets June 2017 tickets (under restricted items) and not in the proctor books.

So... before panicing I'd wait for tickets since it was up before the June test but not in our tickets.

They are still available they just sold out multiple times and again right before Feb. I'm sure they'll talk to the LSAC to get it figured out. Its still good for training. I have to admit Ive become so comfortable with timing watches are more like security blankets now. I want it there but prefer not to look at it ha.

You MAY NOT bring into the test center or use any of the following:

This is copied from the Lsac website.
I wonder if the 180 is even allowed any more.

God damn..... I guess this answers it then. The 180 watch was used by friends over the last several administrations and I know for a fact a friend used a Chrono watch in Sept 2016.

Regardless, thank you for citing this @rchastain0809. That's why I switched over from the 180 watch, sold it, and got a $12 Amazon Casio Men's MRW200H-7EV Sport Resin Watch.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005JVP0FU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The one J.Y. uses in this video is CASIO ANALOG MRW-200H-1BV: https://7sage.com/lesson/keep-time/

    CASIO ANALOG MRW-200H-1BV: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005JVP0LE/

But the page has a link to Casio Men's MRW200H-7EV Sport Resin Watch (the one @"Alex Divine" owns), and it looks better because the numbers are only on the rotating bezel : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005JVP0FU

Sports Resin For life. It's actually in the first link in the https://7sage.com/lesson/keep-time/
under "Get a watch with a rotating bezel

Like this one." Which is indeed the sports resin MRW200H model. Thing is like a tank, too!

    I actually rewatched the video.

J.Y. @ 2:06: (about LSAT watches) “They are just all varying degrees of suck”

“It’s not like those LSAT watch makers are around for all that long”… “whereas CASIO has been making watches for 10000 years.” LOL

Haha-- they are cheap AF my man. It seems like from the review --- and no exaggeration --- 50% of 180 watches have some sort of issue and their customer service is basically non-existent. They're cheap watches marketed towards idiots like me who thought it was some silver bullet.

"Varying degrees of suck" - JY The man. The myth. The Legend.

Mine arrived today from Amazon!! I finally got the J.Y.-recommended watch (a.k.a. The Legend Watch)!

Has anyone tried or known anyone who has brought three casio watches and used one each section? Now that I am switching back to my Casio, and being at this point in my prep, I feel like it's a little much. The bezel approach seems solid. or 35-10-45. But just curious if anyone has been able to put three watches on their desk during the exam?

I'm not sure, but it sounds like an idea. I'm definitely bringing 2 at least.

Yep you can do the three watch system It can be a bit easier than the bezel system and makes it simple to just push and go. Its a bit overkill but I saw someone do it and read about it. I also called the LSAC before Dec last year to make sure it was ok and it is.

Awesome, thanks! I guess it also depends on how much desk space you have. Have to make room for all your pencils as well.

Pretty bummed about not being able to use the Mastermind, but can also vouch for the Casio with the rotating bezel.

Same. But, you know what? It actually works great and IMO, now hat I've gotten used to it, it's arguably easier and more reliable. Things built like a damn tank, too.

is the ticking loud or low?

Super quiet. Can't even hear it

Excellent! I remember for the September test I was going crazy trying to find a quiet ticking watch in stores.. I looked like a crazy person who looked like I loved listening to watches tick for the amount of time I was in that section, lmao.

Are you looking for a quiet watch because the ticking will break your concentration?

Yeah I'm looking for a quiet watch! Not necessarily that it will break my concentration, it's just super annoying lol

I'll probably take 2 watches then. Just in case... I may entertain the idea of just having 3 of those $10 watches JY mentioned in the video. (Black Casio) As long as it's aloud, it seems like that would be pretty awesome! haha.

Still, turning the rotating Bezel does literally take a 2 seconds... Decisions, decisions...

My original watch was the bezel Casio and I just gave it LSAT markings... but the lack of exactness bugs me, but Ive found with proctors same don't start time at the exact minute. There was a digital wall clock in my testing room (oh the irony) and they tried to say we started at X:45 when the clock said X:45:50 lol the room was all X:46!

Yeah, honestly shit like that happening scares me a bit. It's out of my control, so I guess I'll roll with the punches.... This new rule just bugs me.
