Most schools that I've seen have prompts/allow for optional essays. You should write an optionalessay if you have something to say. If you don't have anything meaningful to write about, then that essay is, at best, not going to help you.

maybe it is because on OLSAS they break up the 4,000 word essay into two 2,000 word essays? And then leave a 2,500 word optionalessay? I don't really get the logic as writing one 4,000 word essay is different than writing two 2,000 word essays

@westcoastbestcoast thank you! This is really helpful. I only submitted on January 10, so it wasn't too long ago, but I'll at least start putting together a Why X letter/essay (I chose a different optionalessay to submit with my application).
