Why don't you call them and ask? They won't bite. I didn't apply to UVA so I couldn't tell you, but they would gladly answer your question. People don't call their target schools (and LSAC for that matter) enough when it comes to things like this. -

Most schools that I've seen have prompts/allow for optional essays. You should write an optional essay if you have something to say. If you don't have anything meaningful to write about, then that essay is, at best, not going to help you.
