I too will be 37 in November. Man, with a full time job and a life full of sh*t going on it's tough to put the 4+ hours a day I need to study... Anyhow, just venting.
If you're sure that's the issue, spend more time initially before beginning the questions. Either spend more time looking for inferences or how the rules will interact.
Flash cards are definitely the way to go if you're trying to memorise them. Having the valid and invalid forms on index cards, and drilling them together helped me, that way I had to actually think about it rather than just look at it.
