While speaking it out loud, I found a trick. Thing of the two concepts on an independent and a dependent. An independent is something that stands alone and does not need support (sufficient) while a dependent is something that relies on the independent (necessary).
To put this into action, look at Question 5: "The number of beneficial soil bacteria increases whenever plant material is mixed into garden soil". What is the independent here, in other words what stands alone. Clearly it is plant material because the bacteria is relying on it to grow.
