Study Groups

I asked this as a comment in a different thread, but realized it might deviate the convo from the OPs point.

I'm interested in joining/starting a study group in my area (Newport, Jersey City NJ) but have questions.

When people do group study sessions, what's actually done in them? How do you decide what content is covered as a group VS individually, so that everyone gets the most out of it? How will the leader organize the content we go over, and is it expected that we finish the CC entirely before group studying?

Get ready! The next BR session for January test-takers will be this evening, Sunday, January 13th at 8:30pm EST (after J.Y.’s session)! We will be reviewing the Logical Reasoning sections from PT83. Don’t forget to see the Google docs below to list which questions you may have had the most trouble with so we can go over it during the call.

~~~~~~~~~~~
I am happy to announce that I will be leading the Blind Review study group for the January 2019 LSAT!
5 weeks until the LSAT!
We’ve got a few weeks before the exam, which is enough time to squeeze in a couple of tests for group sessions. 7Sage has kindly allowed the use of their webinar capabilities so we can get started right away! We welcome every person at every stage of preparation, from the startiest-of-starts to the reasoning experts. Either way, this is to support your ongoing efforts. Feel free to continue preptest-ing and practicing between study sessions.
Here's what you do (please watch the post Core-Curriculum webinar before joining: https://classic.7sage.com/webinar/post-core-curriculum-study-strategies/):
First, take the scheduled practice exam under timed conditions before the session. We will focus on the Logical Reasoning sections.
Next, blind review on your own by breaking down the stimulus, picking the answer choice you feel is correct, and write or type out your reasoning for each correct choice and 4 incorrect answer choices (which will help you remember your train of thought during the study session). Do not check your answers yet!
Then, input the most difficult questions into the excel spreadsheet before the session: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jiEIFiUNbMvRxJQxhrux8HXpj7vWuvyg8hq3eHKQ9I0/edit?usp=sharing
Finally, we will review the test as a group on its scheduled date via GoToMeeting webinar: https://global.gotomeeting.com/join/879623125. We’ll go over priority questions first, then review ways to attack the other questions. Bring your test as we will not be sharing screens.
Please, do not check your answers before the study session!
Part of the learning process is being able to solidify your reasoning by discussing with fellow group members. If you happen to know the right answer, please don’t say it - use reasoning to convince us that your answer is the right one! We probably won’t go over every question, but we will focus the ones that we had a lot of trouble with.
  • Sunday January 13th, 2019 (PT 83) 8:30pm ET
  • Monday, January 21st, 2019 (Pep Rally!) 8:30pm ET
  • Blind Review refresher: http://classic.7sage.com/lesson/the-blind-review-is-a-habit/
    If you're interested, please post a comment below (and notify me if you change your username afterwards as the tags will not update on their own). If neither study sessions work for you, message me! We may have enough people to create an alternate group.
    Special thanks goes to @keets993 for doing such a great job on previous study groups!!
    Ninja edit: fixed the 2nd BR date (should’ve been the 13th) and the years.
    Ninja edit 2: Due to a few scheduling hiccups on my end, and J.Y.’s recently announced PT86 review sessions, (which I highly encourage everyone to check out if they haven’t already!), all sessions will be held at 8:30pm ET.
    Hi all! I am wondering if anyone might be located in DC too and interested in meeting in-person to study for LSAT together? A little about me: currently working full time in DC for an international organization. Georgetown class of 17. Have been studying since July but feel like hitting the plateau...
    Looking for Study Partner
    Hi Everyone,
    I’m currently studying for the June exam and have been working through the reading comprehension section to improve my score. I am currently averaging four wrong on this section. However, logic games is my strength. I have had much success with hard games such as the virus, dinosaur, and stain glass windows.
    I’m looking for a study partner who’s strength leans more towards reading comprehension. I can help you with logic games so we can get very good at both sections together. Please PM me if you are interested.
    Thanks!
    When we all tackle a tough question together.
    If you are done the curriculum or almost done the curriculum, join us when you can. We welcome people in all stages of prep. The point of the group is to get your lsat nerd on with other like-minded people and make the process more fun. Expand your thinking and learning by interacting with others! For my fellow shy-people, everyone is going to be focused on their own answers/questions that I guarantee you they will not be judging you based on mispronounced words, reading-speed, etc. It's all for fun!
    Note: Take the PT under timed conditions; BR to the best of your abilities; join us for all or part of the call! For the purposes of the group please don't check the answers beforehand. If you happen to know the answer, keep it to yourself, and win the argument using your reasoning. Also, please don't go "so I know the answer is C but I don't know why B is wrong?" as the purpose is so that we all collaborate on improving our reasoning skills.
    Enter the questions you wish to go over on the spreadsheet below! Write your name beside the question(s) you wish to cover, if the question(s) you want to cover are already marked by someone else, add your name! :) The more discussion, the merrier.
    Based off of my experience and deliberation with some other folks, we're going to try something new for this group. Instead of having a call every week, we will instead have a call every other week. The reason being is that I think that the process of taking a PT, BR-ing it thoroughly, and doing drills to address weaknesses that were ascertained from that PT/BR can be really taxing when repeated weekly. I noticed, among myself and regulars on the call, that having the call scheduled every week really exacerbated burnout. Especially since people would try to force themselves to attend as many calls as possible because they felt they'd be missing out and would neglect signs of burnout. I realize that this means there won't be as many calls but this was a decision made after much deliberation. After all, PTs are just a snapshot of your understanding, the bulk of your learning happens in BR and drilling. Of course, people are free to take a PT or two every week if they need to.
    Hello all,
    I have been leading the September 2018 study group since June (!) and as d-day is getting closer, I'm happy (?) to announce that I will also be leading BR calls for November 2018 LSAT. This group will be starting a week after the September LSAT (Sep 8) so that people who took or were preparing for September can have a week to rest. We will start on September 20th, which is a Thursday night, at 7:30 PM EST.
    If you are interested in joining, please comment down below. If the time chosen most absolutely cannot ever work for you, please message me ASAP so that if there's enough people we can change timing or set up an alternate private group for you. Also, if you are just starting to or about to start PT-ing, this schedule will mainly focus on PTs from 70s and 80s, so PLEASE make sure you do some 40s and 50s before just jumping into the recent tests. Also, this schedule is not meant to be followed rigidly so be sure to take breaks when you need to to combat burnout. PTs are just a guage of your skill, they are not sufficient by themselves, to improve your score. You also need to supplement PTs will timed and untimed drills to solidify your strengths and conquer your weaknesses. As equally important is the need for a thorough BR. This means that you go over every question you were unsure of during timed conditions and write or type out your reasoning. Break down the structure of the stimulus, what the question requires for you, and use your reasoning to eliminate four answer choices and keeping one. This is done so that your reasoning is right in front of you and you can reinforce the right reasoning and get rid of the wrong one. A thorough BR does not consist of "oh well had I looked at it for 2 more seconds, I would've picked D instead of B" you are only doing yourself a disservice.
    Here is the tentative schedule: https://calendar.google.com/calendar/embed?src=o5h8pap75saf8pmasoh80m2a80%40group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America%2FToronto
    Here's how the BR groups work:
    If you are done the curriculum or almost done the curriculum, join us when you can. We welcome people in all stages of prep. The point of the group is to get your lsat nerd on with other like-minded people and make the process more fun. Expand your thinking and learning by interacting with others! It's all for fun!
    Take the PT under timed conditions; BR to the best of your abilities; join us for all or part of the call! For the purposes of the group please don't check the answers beforehand. If you happen to know the answer, keep it to yourself, and win the argument using your reasoning. Also, please don't go "so I know the answer is C but I don't know why B is wrong?" as the purpose is so that we all collaborate on improving our reasoning skills. We will also discuss strategies for getting faster at certain question types.
    There will be a spreadsheet posted when we first start PT-ing (so the week of the 20th). Enter the questions you wish to go over on the spreadsheet! Write your name beside the question(s) you wish to cover, if the question(s) you want to cover are already marked by someone else, add your name! :) The more discussion, the merrier. Generally, we only got through one section each session.
    We will be using go-to-meeting (access kindly provided by 7sage) and the link will be the same throughout the entire run of the group. It will also be posted on the first week we start.
    Oh yes, and also be sure you have watched Josh's seminar on post-CC strategies: https://classic.7sage.com/webinar/post-core-curriculum-study-strategies/
    Edit: Also! If you change your username after posting here please inform me, the system does not automatically change old posts made with older usenames with newer ones.
    Update: Based off of my experience and deliberation with some other folks, we're going to try something new for this group. Instead of having a call every week, we will instead have a call every other week. The reason being is that I think that the process of taking a PT, BR-ing it thoroughly, and doing drills to address weaknesses that were ascertained from that PT/BR can be really taxing when repeated weekly. After all, PTs are just a snapshot of your understanding, the bulk of your learning happens in BR and drilling. Of course, people are free to take a PT or two every week if they need to. There is a tentative schedule posted and it has been amended accordingly.
    Hey 7Sagers, I'm leading BR calls for PT 85 (September 2018 LSAT).
    There will be ten sessions total.
    Some sessions will be from 12p - 2p ET and others will be from 6p - 8p ET. Please see detailed schedule below.
    What happens in these sessions?
    For RC, we'll read the passage together, paragraph by paragraph. I'll ask you to make low resolution summaries of each paragraph. We'll use those low res summaries to build higher resolution summaries. Then, we'll answer the questions together. For LR, I'll ask you to state which questions were circled for BR. We'll work through the questions the group nominates.
    How should I prepare?
    Have a clean, unmarked copy of the PT ready in front of you so we can read and answer the questions together. Please wear headphones and try to be in a quiet place.
    Whether you are a part of the group or not, please be sure to join us this week, to cheer on those taking the November LSAT. We will also have some special guests who are voluntarily taking time out of their busy lives to share their experiences and answer questions.
    So join us, cheer those taking it on, and walk out after taking the test with a sense of accomplishment.
    Doing it on the weekend this time so hopefully its more accomodating AND we can discuss what to do (and not to do) during the last week!
    Love you all and remember your value and worth as a person does not depend on how you score! (3(/p)
    November'18 Study Group | Blind Review PT 84 | Thursday, November 1st| 7:30 PM EST
    Hello all!
    We're almost towards the end! But first, we have to decide when to have our call.
    To those that are unaware, there's an admisisons seminar this Thursday at 9:00 PM EST: https://classic.7sage.com/discussion/#/discussion/18290/admissions-q-a-thurs-nov-1-9-p-m-et. It's a great opportunity to attend a seminar and directly ask David your questions and hopefully have them answered! (I think you have to raise your hand to be called upon).
    Thereby, please vote on whether you would prefer to have the call on Thursday, November 1st or Friday, November 2nd. The voting ends on Tuesday, October 30th, 2018 at 11:59 PM EST. You can't change your vote.
    If you are done the curriculum or almost done the curriculum, join us when you can. We welcome people in all stages of prep. The point of the group is to get your lsat nerd on with other like-minded people and make the process more fun. Expand your thinking and learning by interacting with others! Instead of having a call every week, we will instead have a call every other week. The reason being is that I think that the process of taking a PT, BR-ing it thoroughly, and doing drills to address weaknesses that were ascertained from that PT/BR can be really taxing when repeated weekly. I noticed, among myself and regulars on the call, that having the call scheduled every week really exacerbated burnout. Especially since people would try to force themselves to attend as many calls as possible because they felt they'd be missing out and would neglect signs of burnout. I realize that this means there won't be as many calls but this was a decision made after much deliberation. After all, PTs are just a snapshot of your understanding, the bulk of your learning happens in BR and drilling. Of course, people are free to take a PT or two every week if they need to.
    I guess you can say that I am starting out. I'm going to be testing in November and more than likely January as well. I decided that September was unrealistic. We can get a small group going where we can all work on problems together and help each other get through this madness. I feel really optimistic about this exam and believe we can do well. Feel free to contact me here or look me up on Instagram. My name is LawSkewlProbs on IG. Hope to hear from some of your soon.
    Hello San Diegans,
    I'm looking to start a study group in San Diego where we can BR together either in person or on video chat. I've found BR calls on 7sage to be very helpful and I would love to do something similar with local LSAT students. It would probably be once every two weeks and we can BR full PTs and/or timed sections.
