So just to recap, a causation relationship is never going to be a "true or false" kind of question, only a "most strongly supported by which explanation" kind of question?
And the target phenomenon is the "effect", and the hypothesis/potential explanation is the "cause".
Couldn't each of these hypotheses be contributing to the observed phenomenon? Thus, both are potential links in the causal chain. They're not necessarily mutually exclusive and therefore not necessarily competing. Toxic runoff and algal bloom could both be contributing to dolphin deaths.
A cruise ship from Turks and Caicos, being driven by a crew made up of dolphins, was taken over by pirates. All of the dolphin crew was executed and when the pirates got to Hawaii, their dream vacation destination, they dumped the dolphins overboard. The dolphins were swept away in a current that brought their bodies to that specific beach.

Ahh… this is where being a former science teacher begins to help. The words phenomenon and hypothesis are in our everyday vocabulary!

I don't know how I feel about the fact that the last sentence of this lesson was a conditional 😅 I'm traumatized I think.
