All LSAT test takers are studying hard. Megatron is an LSAT test taker. Megatron is studying hard (Major premise). All things studying hard are awesome. Megatron is awesome.
@SamuelForeman Only Claim 3 would be considered a major premise, since it was previously the main conclusion until Claims 4 and 5 were introduced. Claim 4 would only be considered a premise since it supports Claim 5 but cannot be supported by other previously made claims.
so until claims 4 and 5 were added, claims 1 and 2 were the "major" or only premises to support the argument in claim 3.
since claims 4 and 5 were added on-top, they became minors to support the overarching major conclusion that fluffers is cute due to being adorable and all adorable things are cute.
Do I need to know this ? I feel like I can intuitively tell with a lot of questions and adding more things to remember would "muffle" my intuition maybe not though just wondering
I think I get it! The example of a mother being both a mother and a daughter depends on who she is in relation to, same with the premise and conclusion!
A complex argument includes single claims that both give and receive support.
It's an argument that runs on.
Now you don't just have a premise(s) and 1 conclusion but an additional conclusion birthed from the first.
EX:
in a complex argument you have
premise(s) a - conclusion a
premise ab and conclusion b
premise ab - is a sub-conclusion (or intermediate conclusion or major premise) a claim that receives and gives support to another claim. this is both conclusion and premise.
Congratulations, your argument just had a baby!! Its name is Sub-conclusion.
I think I got it, and I learned that you can sometime split a sentence to parse out more premises or conclusions. Here's my example:
Research shows that employees who receive regular feedback are more likely to improve their performance. Improved employee performance generally leads to higher overall team productivity. Since Meridian Solutions recently implemented a system of regular performance feedback, the company’s teams are likely to become more productive. Because higher team productivity allows firms to compete more effectively in crowded markets, Meridian Solutions is better positioned than its competitors.
Premises:
- Research shows that employees who receive regular feedback are more likely to improve their performance.
- Improved employee performance generally leads to higher overall team productivity.
- Meridian Solutions recently implemented a system of regular performance feedback
- higher team productivity allows firms to compete more effectively in crowded markets
Sub Conclusion: - the company’s teams are likely to become more productive
Main Conclusion: - Meridian Solutions is better positioned than its competitors.
hi! does anyone have any tips on identifying the major premises and conclusions? i understand the relationships, just not the order of importance. thanks!

I understand the overall lesson, but what is the exact definition of a major premise?
Are both 3 and 4 Major premises, or just 3, as it also receives support in addition to giving support to the main conclusion?
@SamuelForeman Only Claim 3 would be considered a major premise, since it was previously the main conclusion until Claims 4 and 5 were introduced. Claim 4 would only be considered a premise since it supports Claim 5 but cannot be supported by other previously made claims.
Here we go, my brain is starting to get confused hahaha
well it goes like this,
the fourth, the fifth,
the minor premise and then the major premise
so until claims 4 and 5 were added, claims 1 and 2 were the "major" or only premises to support the argument in claim 3.
since claims 4 and 5 were added on-top, they became minors to support the overarching major conclusion that fluffers is cute due to being adorable and all adorable things are cute.
all cats are fat. theo (my cat) is a cat. therefore, theo must be fat. all fat cats are also cute. theo is cute.

does it help to logically order the premise to make sense aka moving fluffers is a dog , or does that corrupt the argument logic?
@Anthony.pardella@gmail.com Stated in a previous lesson that the order of premises/conclusion does not affect the strength or validity of the argument

Would it be fair to say that sub premises support a sub conclusion and major premises support the main conclusion?

just how someone can be a mother and daughter at same time
a claim can be a premise and conclusion at the same time
the person is a mother or child depending on who she is standing in relation to
same is true in arguments
