saw it again today & it made so much more sense why the correct answer was correct

okay so did anyone feel a little misled when the directions said "untimed"? because i took my SWEET time with these questions & now its clowning my ass

so this question was presented way earlier in the circuculum for me & not only did i get it wrong the first time, but i struggled horrifically

now, almost a month later, i understand the errors that i made in logic, comprehension, and absorption of the stimulus.

to help myself think through this question, i'm gonna break down each part of the stimulus in hopes to arrive at what i need to get from the question stem, which asks us:

"Which of the following most accurately expresses the overall conclusion of the florist's argument?"

• "overall conclusion" = right away, hints to me that there might be more than 1 conclusion made by the author, but 1 is a supporting conclusion for a greater, overall conclusion

• "Some people like to have green carnations on St. Patrick's Day." = CONTEXT

  • this is just a statement of fact, doesn't assert anything or set up anything else besides simple information

• "But flowers that are naturally green are extremely rare." = MINOR PREMISE

  • use of the word "But" fucked me up & honestly this question haunted me since i first saw it weeks ago, still really mind blown on what the hell the LSAT was doing to my brain at the time lol

    • in this instance, "But" is being used simply as a tool of language for the sentence ---> i took it as to be that this is NOT being used as an indicator word

    • that said, i ignored the word "But" altogether and just read the rest of the sentence as a pure statement much like how a normal premise might present itself

• "Thus, it is very difficult for plant breeders to produce green carnations." = MINOR-CONCLUSION

  • "Thus" is functioning as an indicator word, so i know that this sentence is suggestive of a conclusion sentence

  • IF the stimulus ended with this sentence, it could be probably fair that this is the overall conclusion of the Florist's argument

    • HOWEVER!!!! the stimulus keeps going

• "Before St. Patrick's Day, then, it is wise, for florists to stock up on white carnations..." = MAIN CONCLUSION

  • i ignored the "Before St. Patrick's Day" phrase to help further isolate the kernel of the statement, just more words that my brain didn't feel like computing

  • "THEN, it is wise for florists to stock up on white carnations..."

    • "then" hinted at an indicator for a conclusion -- if i replace "then" with "therefore" or "so", the point of statement stays the same

    • this statement (aka conclusion) i read to be a suggestion --- an earlier lesson remarked that suggestions or 'shoulds' or recommendations may be indicative of an argument's conclusion

  • the reason this is the MAIN CONCLUSION is because all other statements seem to be in support of this main statement

    • "Some people like to have green carnations on St. Patrick's Day." (context)

      • background set up

    • "...flowers that are natural green are extremely rare..." (minor premise)

      • so... what? (insert minor conclusion below)

    • "...it is very difficult for plant breeders to produce green carnations." (minor conclusion)

      • so... what?

        • SO.... WHAT??? -----> "it is wise for florists to stock up on white carnations." (main conclusion)

        • if i keep asking myself "Okay, SO... what??", i can dig and dig until i get to the actual root of what the main argument is

very long winded but this is why the only correct answer is choice (A) -- all other statements in the stimulus offer support for the argument that florists should stock up on white carnations prior to St. Patrick's Day

"less than ideal" to me sounds like okay well its not the best possible answer, but its the best one out of the options that i have available -- which helps because i often can narrow down to 2 choices but struggle once i get to that point

same!! i was between A and E, ultimately choosing A because i felt like E was a restatement of the context, rather than an affirmative of the conclusion of the author, which felt more supported by answer choice A

yuuuup me too -- good reminder to leave the ego at the door & follow the process. it clearly exists for a reason (sigh)
